¹⁵The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. ¹⁶And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; ¹⁷but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.”   ^3:1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?” ²The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; ³but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’ ” ⁴But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die; ⁵for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” ⁶So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. ⁷Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

¹⁵ Dios el Señor tomó al hombre y lo puso en el jardín del Edén para que lo cultivara y lo cuidara, ¹⁶ y le dio este mandato: «Puedes comer de todos los árboles del jardín, ¹⁷ pero del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal no deberás comer. El día que de él comas, ciertamente morirás».
3:1 La serpiente era más astuta que todos los animales del campo que Dios el Señor había hecho, así que le preguntó a la mujer: —¿Es verdad que Dios les dijo que no comieran de ningún árbol del jardín? ² —Podemos comer del fruto de todos los árboles —respondió la mujer—. ³ Pero, en cuanto al fruto del árbol que está en medio del jardín, Dios nos ha dicho: “No coman de ese árbol, ni lo toquen; de lo contrario, morirán”. ⁴ Pero la serpiente le dijo a la mujer: —¡No es cierto, no van a morir! ⁵ Dios sabe muy bien que, cuando coman de ese árbol, se les abrirán los ojos y llegarán a ser como Dios, conocedores del bien y del mal. ⁶ La mujer vio que el fruto del árbol era bueno para comer, y que tenía buen aspecto y era deseable para adquirir sabiduría, así que tomó de su fruto y comió. Luego le dio a su esposo, y también él comió. ⁷ En ese momento se les abrieron los ojos, y tomaron conciencia de su desnudez. Por eso, para cubrirse entretejieron hojas de higuera.

¹Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven,
  and whose sin is put away! ²Happy are they to whom the Lord imputes no guilt,
and in whose spirit there is no guile! ³While I held my tongue, my bones withered away,
  because of my groaning all day long.
⁴For your hand was heavy upon me day and night;
my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer.  ⁵Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
  and did not conceal my guilt.
⁶I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.”
Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin.
⁷Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in | time of trouble;
  when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them.
⁸You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with shouts of deliverance. 
⁹“I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go;
  I will guide you with my eye.
¹⁰Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding;
who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you.” ¹¹Great are the tribulations of the wicked; but mercy embraces those who trust in the Lord.
¹²Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the Lord;
shout for joy, all who are true of heart.

Dichoso aquel
    a quien se le perdonan sus transgresiones,
    a quien se le borran sus pecados. ² Dichoso aquel
    a quien el Señor no toma en cuenta su maldad
    y en cuyo espíritu no hay engaño.
³ Mientras guardé silencio,
    mis huesos se fueron consumiendo
    por mi gemir de todo el día.
⁴ Mi fuerza se fue debilitando
    como al calor del verano,
porque día y noche  tu mano pesaba sobre mí. Selah ⁵ Pero te confesé mi pecado,
    y no te oculté mi maldad. Me dije: «Voy a confesar mis transgresiones al Señor»,
    y tú perdonaste mi maldad y mi pecado. Selah ⁶ Por eso los fieles te invocan
    en momentos de angustia; caudalosas aguas podrán desbordarse,
    pero a ellos no los alcanzarán. ⁷ Tú eres mi refugio; tú me protegerás del peligro   y me rodearás con cánticos de liberación. Selah

¹²Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned—¹³sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. ¹⁴Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. ¹⁵But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. ¹⁶And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. ¹⁷If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.   ¹⁸Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. ¹⁹For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

¹² Por medio de un solo hombre el pecado entró en el mundo, y por medio del pecado entró la muerte; fue así como la muerte pasó a toda la humanidad, porque todos pecaron.^[a] 13 Antes de promulgarse la ley, ya existía el pecado en el mundo. Es cierto que el pecado no se toma en cuenta cuando no hay ley; ¹⁴ sin embargo, desde Adán hasta Moisés la muerte reinó, incluso sobre los que no pecaron quebrantando un mandato, como lo hizo Adán, quien es figura de aquel que había de venir. ¹⁵ Pero la transgresión de Adán no puede compararse con la gracia de Dios. Pues, si por la transgresión de un solo hombre murieron todos, ¡cuánto más el don que vino por la gracia de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, abundó para todos! ¹⁶ Tampoco se puede comparar la dádiva de Dios con las consecuencias del pecado de Adán. El juicio que lleva a la condenación fue resultado de un solo pecado, pero la dádiva que lleva a la justificación tiene que ver con^[b] una multitud de transgresiones. ¹⁷ Pues, si por la transgresión de un solo hombre reinó la muerte, con mayor razón los que reciben en abundancia la gracia y el don de la justicia reinarán en vida por medio de un solo hombre, Jesucristo. ¹⁸ Por tanto, así como una sola transgresión causó la condenación de todos, también un solo acto de justicia produjo la justificación que da vida a todos. ¹⁹ Porque así como por la desobediencia de uno solo muchos fueron constituidos pecadores, también por la obediencia de uno solo muchos serán constituidos justos.

¹Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. ²He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. ³The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴But he answered, “It is written,  ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” ⁵Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, ⁶saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,  ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up,  so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ” ⁷Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” ⁸Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; ⁹and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written,  ‘Worship the Lord your God,    and serve only him.’ ” ¹¹Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Luego el Espíritu llevó a Jesús al desierto para que el diablo lo sometiera a tentación. ² Después de ayunar cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, tuvo hambre. ³ El tentador se le acercó y le propuso: —Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ordena a estas piedras que se conviertan en pan.
⁴ Jesús le respondió: —Escrito está: “No solo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”. ⁵ Luego el diablo lo llevó a la ciudad santa e hizo que se pusiera de pie sobre la parte más alta del templo, y le dijo: ⁶ —Si eres el Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo. Porque escrito está: »“Ordenará que sus ángeles
    te sostengan en sus manos,
para que no tropieces con piedra alguna”». ⁷ —También está escrito: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios” —le contestó Jesús. ⁸ De nuevo lo tentó el diablo, llevándolo a una montaña muy alta, y le mostró todos los reinos del mundo y su esplendor.
⁹ —Todo esto te daré si te postras y me adoras. ¹⁰ —¡Vete, Satanás! —le dijo Jesús—. Porque escrito está: “Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele solamente a él”. ¹¹ Entonces el diablo lo dejó, y unos ángeles acudieron a servirle.

¹Blow the trumpet in Zion;
  sound the alarm on my holy mountain!
 Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
  for the day of the Lord is coming, it is near—   ²a day of darkness and gloom,
  a day of clouds and thick darkness!
 Like blackness spread upon the mountains
  a great and powerful army comes;
 their like has never been from of old,
  nor will be again after them
  in ages to come. ¹²Yet even now, says the Lord,
  return to me with all your heart,
 with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
  ¹³rend your hearts and not your clothing.
 Return to the Lord, your God,
  for he is gracious and merciful,
 slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,
  and relents from punishing.
 ¹⁴Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
  and leave a blessing behind him,
 a grain offering and a drink offering
  for the Lord, your God?
 ¹⁵Blow the trumpet in Zion;
  sanctify a fast;
 call a solemn assembly;
  ¹⁶gather the people.
 Sanctify the congregation;
  assemble the aged;
 gather the children,
  even infants at the breast.
 Let the bridegroom leave his room,
  and the bride her canopy.
 ¹⁷Between the vestibule and the altar
  let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep.
 Let them say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
  and do not make your heritage a mockery,
  a byword among the nations.
 Why should it be said among the peoples,
  ‘Where is their God?’ ”

la trompeta en Sión;
    den la voz de alarma en mi santo monte.
Tiemblen todos los habitantes del país,
    pues ya viene el día del Señor;
    en realidad ya está cerca.
² Día de tinieblas y oscuridad,
    día de nubes y densos nubarrones.
Como la aurora que se extiende sobre los montes,
    así avanza un pueblo fuerte y numeroso,
pueblo como nunca lo hubo en la antigüedad
    ni lo habrá en las generaciones futuras. ¹² «Ahora bien —afirma el Señor—,
    vuélvanse a mí de todo corazón,
    con ayuno, llantos y lamentos». ¹³ Rásguense el corazón
    y no las vestiduras.
Vuélvanse al Señor su Dios,
    porque él es bondadoso y compasivo,
lento para la ira y lleno de amor,
    cambia de parecer y no castiga.
¹⁴ Tal vez Dios reconsidere y cambie de parecer,
    y deje tras de sí una bendición.
Las ofrendas de cereales y las libaciones
    son del Señor su Dios. ¹⁵ Toquen la trompeta en Sión,
    proclamen el ayuno,
convoquen a una asamblea solemne.
¹⁶ Congreguen al pueblo,
    purifiquen la asamblea;
junten a los ancianos del pueblo,
    reúnan a los pequeños
    y a los niños de pecho.
Que salga de su alcoba el recién casado,
    y la recién casada de su cámara nupcial.
¹⁷ Lloren, sacerdotes, ministros del Señor,
    entre el pórtico y el altar;
y digan: «Compadécete, Señor, de tu pueblo.
    No entregues tu propiedad al oprobio,
    para que las naciones no se burlen de ella.^[a]
¿Por qué habrán de decir entre los pueblos:
    “Dónde está su Dios?”»

¹Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;
  in your great compassion blot out my offenses.
 ²Wash me through and through from my wickedness,
  and cleanse me from my sin.
 ³For I know my offenses,
  and my sin is ever before me.
 ⁴Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;
  so you are justified when you speak and right in your judgment.
 ⁵Indeed, I was born steeped in wickedness,
  a sinner from my mother’s womb.
 ⁶Indeed, you delight in truth deep within me,
  and would have me know wisdom deep within.
 ⁷Remove my sins with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
  wash me, and I shall be purer than snow.
 ⁸Let me hear joy and gladness;
  that the body you have broken may rejoice.
 ⁹Hide your face from my sins,
  and blot out all my wickedness.
 ¹⁰Create in me a clean heart, O God,
  and renew a right spirit within me.
 ¹¹Cast me not away from your presence,
  and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
 ¹²Restore to me the joy of your salvation
  and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
 ¹³Let me teach your ways to offenders,
  and sinners shall be restored to you.
 ¹⁴Rescue me from bloodshed, O God of my salvation,
  and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness.
 ¹⁵O Lord, open my lips,
  and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
 ¹⁶For you take no delight in sacrifice, or I would give it.
  You are not pleased with burnt offering.
 ¹⁷The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit;
  a troubled and broken heart, O God, you will not despise.

en compasión de mí, oh Dios,
    conforme a tu gran amor;
conforme a tu inmensa bondad,
    borra mis transgresiones.
² Lávame de toda mi maldad
    y límpiame de mi pecado. ³ Yo reconozco mis transgresiones;
    siempre tengo presente mi pecado.
⁴ Contra ti he pecado, solo contra ti,
    y he hecho lo que es malo ante tus ojos;
por eso, tu sentencia es justa,
    y tu juicio, irreprochable.
⁵ Yo sé que soy malo de nacimiento;
    pecador me concibió mi madre.
⁶ Yo sé que tú amas la verdad en lo íntimo;
    en lo secreto me has enseñado sabiduría. ⁷ Purifícame con hisopo, y quedaré limpio;
    lávame, y quedaré más blanco que la nieve.
⁸ Anúnciame gozo y alegría;
    infunde gozo en estos huesos que has quebrantado.
⁹ Aparta tu rostro de mis pecados
    y borra toda mi maldad. ¹⁰ Crea en mí, oh Dios, un corazón limpio,
    y renueva la firmeza de mi espíritu.
¹¹ No me alejes de tu presencia
    ni me quites tu santo Espíritu.
¹² Devuélveme la alegría de tu salvación;
    que un espíritu obediente me sostenga.
¹³ Así enseñaré a los transgresores tus caminos,
    y los pecadores se volverán a ti. ¹⁴ Dios mío, Dios de mi salvación,
    líbrame de derramar sangre,
    y mi lengua alabará tu justicia.
¹⁵ Abre, Señor, mis labios,
    y mi boca proclamará tu alabanza.
¹⁶ Tú no te deleitas en los sacrificios
    ni te complacen los holocaustos;
    de lo contrario, te los ofrecería.
¹⁷ El sacrificio que te agrada
    es un espíritu quebrantado;
tú, oh Dios, no desprecias
    al corazón quebrantado y arrepentido.

^20bWe entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. ²¹For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. ^6:1As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. ²For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you,
  and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! ³We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, ⁴but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, ⁵beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; ⁶by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, ⁷truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; ⁸in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; ⁹as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; ¹⁰as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

²⁰ Así que somos embajadores de Cristo, como si Dios los exhortara a ustedes por medio de nosotros: «En nombre de Cristo les rogamos que se reconcilien con Dios». ²¹ Al que no cometió pecado alguno, por nosotros Dios lo trató como pecador, para que en él recibiéramos la justicia de Dios. 6 Nosotros, colaboradores de Dios, les rogamos que no reciban su gracia en vano. ² Porque él dice: «En el momento propicio te escuché,
    y en el día de salvación te ayudé». Les digo que este es el momento propicio de Dios; ¡hoy es el día de salvación! ³ Por nuestra parte, a nadie damos motivo alguno de tropiezo, para que no se desacredite nuestro servicio. ⁴ Más bien, en todo y con mucha paciencia nos acreditamos como servidores de Dios: en sufrimientos, privaciones y angustias; ⁵ en azotes, cárceles y tumultos; en trabajos pesados, desvelos y hambre. ⁶ Servimos con pureza, conocimiento, constancia y bondad; en el Espíritu Santo y en amor sincero; ⁷ con palabras de verdad y con el poder de Dios; con armas de justicia, tanto ofensivas como defensivas;^[d] 8 por honra y por deshonra, por mala y por buena fama; veraces, pero tenidos por engañadores; ⁹ conocidos, pero tenidos por desconocidos; como moribundos, pero aún con vida; golpeados, pero no muertos; ¹⁰ aparentemente tristes, pero siempre alegres; pobres en apariencia, pero enriqueciendo a muchos; como si no tuviéramos nada, pero poseyéndolo todo.

[Jesus said to the disciples:] ¹“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. ²“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. ³But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ⁵“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. ⁶But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ¹⁶“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. ¹⁷But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, ¹⁸so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ¹⁹“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; ²⁰but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. ²¹For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Cuídense de no hacer sus obras de justicia delante de la gente para llamar la atención. Si actúan así, su Padre que está en el cielo no les dará ninguna recompensa. ² »Por eso, cuando des a los necesitados, no lo anuncies al son de trompeta, como lo hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y en las calles para que la gente les rinda homenaje. Les aseguro que ellos ya han recibido toda su recompensa. ³ Más bien, cuando des a los necesitados, que no se entere tu mano izquierda de lo que hace la derecha, ⁴ para que tu limosna sea en secreto. Así tu Padre, que ve lo que se hace en secreto, te recompensará. ⁵ »Cuando oren, no sean como los hipócritas, porque a ellos les encanta orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las plazas para que la gente los vea. Les aseguro que ya han obtenido toda su recompensa. ⁶ Pero tú, cuando te pongas a orar, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre, que está en lo secreto. Así tu Padre, que ve lo que se hace en secreto, te recompensará.  ¹⁶ »Cuando ayunen, no pongan cara triste como hacen los hipócritas, que demudan sus rostros para mostrar que están ayunando. Les aseguro que estos ya han obtenido toda su recompensa. ¹⁷ Pero tú, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara ¹⁸ para que no sea evidente ante los demás que estás ayunando, sino solo ante tu Padre, que está en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo que se hace en secreto, te recompensará. ¹⁹ »No acumulen para sí tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el óxido destruyen, y donde los ladrones se meten a robar. ²⁰ Más bien, acumulen para sí tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni el óxido carcomen, ni los ladrones se meten a robar. ²¹ Porque donde esté tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón.

¹²The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” ¹³So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. ¹⁴To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.” ¹⁵Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. ¹⁶The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. ¹⁷Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. ¹⁸Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

¹² El Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Sube a encontrarte conmigo en el monte, y quédate allí. Voy a darte las tablas con la ley y los mandamientos que he escrito para guiarlos en la vida». ¹³ Moisés subió al monte de Dios, acompañado por su asistente Josué, ¹⁴ pero a los ancianos les dijo: «Esperen aquí hasta que volvamos. Aarón y Jur se quedarán aquí con ustedes. Si alguno tiene un problema, que acuda a ellos». ¹⁵ En cuanto Moisés subió, una nube cubrió el monte, ¹⁶ y la gloria del Señor se posó sobre el Sinaí. Seis días la nube cubrió el monte. Al séptimo día, desde el interior de la nube el Señor llamó a Moisés. ¹⁷ A los ojos de los israelitas, la gloria del Señor en la cumbre del monte parecía un fuego consumidor. ¹⁸ Moisés se internó en la nube y subió al monte, y allí permaneció cuarenta días y cuarenta noches.

¹⁶For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” ¹⁸We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.
  ¹⁹So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. ²⁰First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, ²¹because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

¹⁶ Cuando les dimos a conocer la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo en todo su poder, no estábamos siguiendo sutiles cuentos supersticiosos, sino dando testimonio de su grandeza, que vimos con nuestros propios ojos. ¹⁷ Él recibió honor y gloria de parte de Dios el Padre, cuando desde la majestuosa gloria se le dirigió aquella voz que dijo: «Este es mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido con él».^[a] 18 Nosotros mismos oímos esa voz que vino del cielo cuando estábamos con él en el monte santo. ¹⁹ Esto ha venido a confirmarnos la palabra^[b] de los profetas, a la cual ustedes hacen bien en prestar atención, como a una lámpara que brilla en un lugar oscuro, hasta que despunte el día y salga el lucero de la mañana en sus corazones. ²⁰ Ante todo, tengan muy presente que ninguna profecía de la Escritura surge de la interpretación particular de nadie. ²¹ Porque la profecía no ha tenido su origen en la voluntad humana, sino que los profetas hablaron de parte de Dios, impulsados por el Espíritu Santo.

¹Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. ²And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. ³Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” ⁵While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” ⁶When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. ⁷But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” ⁸And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. ⁹As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Seis días después, Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, a Jacobo y a Juan, el hermano de Jacobo, y los llevó aparte, a una montaña alta. ² Allí se transfiguró en presencia de ellos; su rostro resplandeció como el sol, y su ropa se volvió blanca como la luz. ³ En esto, se les aparecieron Moisés y Elías conversando con Jesús. ⁴ Pedro le dijo a Jesús:
Señor, ¡qué bueno sería que nos quedemos aquí! Si quieres, levantaré tres albergues: uno para ti, otro para Moisés y otro para Elías. ⁵ Mientras estaba aún hablando, apareció una nube luminosa que los envolvió, de la cual salió una voz que dijo: «Este es mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido con él. ¡Escúchenlo!» ⁶ Al oír esto, los discípulos se postraron sobre su rostro, aterrorizados. ⁷ Pero Jesús se acercó a ellos y los tocó. —Levántense —les dijo—. No tengan miedo. ⁸ Cuando alzaron la vista, no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús. ⁹ Mientras bajaban de la montaña, Jesús les encargó: —No le cuenten a nadie lo que han visto hasta que el Hijo del hombre resucite.

[Moses said to the people:] ¹⁵See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. ¹⁶If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. ¹⁷But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, ¹⁸I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. ¹⁹I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, ²⁰loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

¹⁵ »Hoy te doy a elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre el bien y el mal. ¹⁶ Hoy te ordeno que ames al Señor tu Dios, que andes en sus caminos, y que cumplas sus mandamientos, preceptos y leyes. Así vivirás y te multiplicarás, y el Señor tu Dios te bendecirá en la tierra de la que vas a tomar posesión. ¹⁷ »Pero, si tu corazón se rebela y no obedeces, sino que te desvías para adorar y servir a otros dioses, ¹⁸ te advierto hoy que serás destruido sin remedio. No vivirás mucho tiempo en el territorio que vas a poseer luego de cruzar el Jordán. ¹⁹ »Hoy pongo al cielo y a la tierra por testigos contra ti, de que te he dado a elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre la bendición y la maldición. Elige, pues, la vida, para que vivan tú y tus descendientes. ²⁰ Ama al Señor tu Dios, obedécelo y sé fiel a él, porque de él depende tu vida, y por él vivirás mucho tiempo en el territorio que juró dar a tus antepasados Abraham, Isaac y Jacob».

¹Brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. ²I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, ³for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? ⁴For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human? ⁵What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. ⁶I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. ⁷So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. ⁸The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. ⁹For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building.

¹ Yo, hermanos, no pude dirigirme a ustedes como a espirituales, sino como a inmaduros, apenas niños en Cristo. ² Les di leche porque no podían asimilar alimento sólido, ni pueden todavía, ³ pues aún son inmaduros. Mientras haya entre ustedes celos y contiendas, ¿no serán inmaduros? ¿Acaso no se están comportando según criterios meramente humanos? ⁴ Cuando uno afirma: «Yo sigo a Pablo», y otro: «Yo sigo a Apolos», ¿no es porque están actuando con criterios humanos? ⁵ Después de todo, ¿qué es Apolos? ¿Y qué es Pablo? Nada más que servidores por medio de los cuales ustedes llegaron a creer, según lo que el Señor le asignó a cada uno. ⁶ Yo sembré, Apolos regó, pero Dios ha dado el crecimiento. ⁷ Así que no cuenta ni el que siembra ni el que riega, sino solo Dios, quien es el que hace crecer. ⁸ El que siembra y el que riega están al mismo nivel, aunque cada uno será recompensado según su propio trabajo. ⁹ En efecto, nosotros somos colaboradores al servicio de Dios; y ustedes son el campo de cultivo de Dios, son el edificio de Dios.

[Jesus said to the disciples:] ²¹“You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ ²²But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. ²³So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, ²⁴leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. ²⁵Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. ²⁶Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.   ²⁷“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ²⁸But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ²⁹If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. ³⁰And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.
  ³¹“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ ³²But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
  ³³“Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ ³⁴But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, ³⁵or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. ³⁷Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.”

²¹ »Ustedes han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No mates, y todo el que mate quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal”. ²² Pero yo les digo que todo el que se enoje con su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal. Es más, cualquiera que insulte  a su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del Consejo. Y cualquiera que lo maldigaquedará sujeto al fuego del infierno. ²³ »Por lo tanto, si estás presentando tu ofrenda en el altar y allí recuerdas que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti, ²⁴ deja tu ofrenda allí delante del altar. Ve primero y reconcíliate con tu hermano; luego vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda. ²⁵ »Si tu adversario te va a denunciar, llega a un acuerdo con él lo más pronto posible. Hazlo mientras vayan de camino al juzgado, no sea que te entregue al juez, y el juez al guardia, y te echen en la cárcel. ²⁶ Te aseguro que no saldrás de allí hasta que pagues el último centavo. ²⁷ »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “No cometas adulterio”. ²⁸ Pero yo les digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer y la codicia ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en el corazón. ²⁹ Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te hace pecar, sácatelo y tíralo. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo, y no que todo él sea arrojado al infierno. ³⁰ Y, si tu mano derecha te hace pecar, córtatela y arrójala. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo, y no que todo él vaya al infierno. ³¹ »Se ha dicho: “El que repudia a su esposa debe darle un certificado de divorcio”. ³² Pero yo les digo que, excepto en caso de inmoralidad sexual, todo el que se divorcia de su esposa la induce a cometer adulterio, y el que se casa con la divorciada comete adulterio también. ³³ »También han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No faltes a tu juramento, sino cumple con tus promesas al Señor”. ³⁴ Pero yo les digo: No juren de ningún modo: ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios; ³⁵ ni por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey. ³⁶ Tampoco jures por tu cabeza, porque no puedes hacer que ni uno solo de tus cabellos se vuelva blanco o negro. ³⁷ Cuando ustedes digan “sí”, que sea realmente sí; y, cuando digan “no”, que sea no. Cualquier cosa de más, proviene del maligno.

¹Shout out, do not hold back!
  Lift up your voice like a trumpet!
 Announce to my people their rebellion,
  to the house of Jacob their sins.
 ²Yet day after day they seek me
  and delight to know my ways,
 as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness
  and did not forsake the ordinance of their God;
 they ask of me righteous judgments,
  they delight to draw near to God. ³“Why do we fast, but you do not see?
  Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?”
 Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day,
  and oppress all your workers.
 ⁴Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
  and to strike with a wicked fist.
 Such fasting as you do today
  will not make your voice heard on high.
 ⁵Is such the fast that I choose,
  a day to humble oneself?
 Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush,
  and to lie in sackcloth and ashes?
 Will you call this a fast,
  a day acceptable to the Lord?
 ⁶Is not this the fast that I choose:
  to loose the bonds of injustice,
  to undo the thongs of the yoke,
 to let the oppressed go free,
  and to break every yoke?
 ⁷Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
  and bring the homeless poor into your house;
 when you see the naked, to cover them,
  and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
 ⁸Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
  and your healing shall spring up quickly;
 your vindicator shall go before you,
  the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
 ^9aThen you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
  you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.
   If you remove the yoke from among you,
  the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
 ¹⁰if you offer your food to the hungry
  and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
 then your light shall rise in the darkness
  and your gloom be like the noonday.
 ¹¹The Lord will guide you continually,
  and satisfy your needs in parched places,
  and make your bones strong;
 and you shall be like a watered garden,
  like a spring of water,
  whose waters never fail.
 ¹²Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
  you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
 you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
  the restorer of streets to live in.

¹ ¡Grita con toda tu fuerza, no te reprimas!
    Alza tu voz como trompeta.
Denúnciale a mi pueblo sus rebeldías;
    sus pecados, a los descendientes de Jacob.
² Porque día tras día me buscan,
    y desean conocer mis caminos,
como si fueran una nación
    que practicara la justicia,
como si no hubieran abandonado
    mis mandamientos.
Me piden decisiones justas,
    y desean acercarse a mí,
³ y hasta me reclaman:
    “¿Para qué ayunamos, si no lo tomas en cuenta?
    ¿Para qué nos afligimos, si tú no lo notas?” »Pero el día en que ustedes ayunan,
    hacen negocios y explotan a sus obreros.
⁴ Ustedes solo ayunan para pelear y reñir,
    y darse puñetazos a mansalva.
Si quieren que el cielo atienda sus ruegos,
    ¡ayunen, pero no como ahora lo hacen!
⁵ ¿Acaso el ayuno que he escogido
    es solo un día para que el hombre se mortifique?
¿Y solo para que incline la cabeza como un junco,
    haga duelo y se cubra de ceniza?
¿A eso llaman ustedes día de ayuno
    y el día aceptable al Señor? ⁶ »El ayuno que he escogido,
    ¿no es más bien romper las cadenas de injusticia
    y desatar las correas del yugo,
poner en libertad a los oprimidos
    y romper toda atadura?
⁷ ¿No es acaso el ayuno compartir tu pan con el hambriento
    y dar refugio a los pobres sin techo,
vestir al desnudo
    y no dejar de lado a tus semejantes?
⁸ Si así procedes,
    tu luz despuntará como la aurora,
    y al instante llegará tu sanidad;
tu justicia te abrirá el camino,
    y la gloria del Señor te seguirá.
⁹ Llamarás, y el Señor responderá;
    pedirás ayuda, y él dirá: “¡Aquí estoy!” »Si desechas el yugo de opresión,
    el dedo acusador y la lengua maliciosa,
¹⁰ si te dedicas a ayudar a los hambrientos
    y a saciar la necesidad del desvalido,
entonces brillará tu luz en las tinieblas,
    y como el mediodía será tu noche.
¹¹ El Señor te guiará siempre;
    te saciará en tierras resecas,
    y fortalecerá tus huesos.
Serás como jardín bien regado,
    como manantial cuyas aguas no se agotan.
¹² Tu pueblo reconstruirá las ruinas antiguas
    y levantará los cimientos de antaño;
serás llamado “reparador de muros derruidos”,
    “restaurador de calles transitables”.

¹Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord
  and have great delight in God’s commandments!
 ²Their descendants will be mighty in the land;
  the generation of the upright will be blessed.
 ³Wealth and riches will be in their house,
  and their righteousness will last forever.
 ⁴Light shines in the darkness for the upright;
  the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.
 ⁵It is good for them to be generous in lending
  and to manage their affairs with justice.
 ⁶For they will never be shaken;
  the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.
 ⁷They will not be afraid of any evil rumors;
  their heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
 ⁸Their heart is established and will not shrink,
  until they see their desire upon their enemies.
 ⁹They have given freely to the poor, and their righteousness stands fast forever;
   they will hold up their head with honor.
 Amen.

¹When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. ²For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. ³And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. ⁴My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, ⁵so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. ⁶Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. ⁷But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. ⁸None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. ⁹But, as it is written,
 “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
  nor the human heart conceived,
 what God has prepared for those who love him”—
¹⁰these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. ¹¹For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. ¹²Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. [¹³And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.
  ¹⁴Those who are unspiritual do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. ¹⁵Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else’s scrutiny.
 ¹⁶“For who has known the mind of the Lord
  so as to instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.

Yo mismo, hermanos, cuando fui a anunciarles el testimoniode Dios, no lo hice con gran elocuencia y sabiduría. ² Me propuse más bien, estando entre ustedes, no saber de cosa alguna, excepto de Jesucristo, y de este crucificado. ³ Es más, me presenté ante ustedes con tanta debilidad que temblaba de miedo. ⁴ No les hablé ni les prediqué con palabras sabias y elocuentes, sino con demostración del poder del Espíritu, ⁵ para que la fe de ustedes no dependiera de la sabiduría humana, sino del poder de Dios. ⁶ En cambio, hablamos con sabiduría entre los que han alcanzado madurez, pero no con la sabiduría de este mundo ni con la de sus gobernantes, los cuales terminarán en nada. ⁷ Más bien, exponemos el misterio de la sabiduría de Dios, una sabiduría que ha estado escondida y que Dios había destinado para nuestra gloria desde la eternidad. ⁸ Ninguno de los gobernantes de este mundo la entendió, porque de haberla entendido no habrían crucificado al Señor de la gloria. ⁹ Sin embargo, como está escrito: «Ningún ojo ha visto,
    ningún oído ha escuchado,
ninguna mente humana ha concebido
    lo que Dios ha preparado para quienes lo aman». ¹⁰ Ahora bien, Dios nos ha revelado esto por medio de su Espíritu, pues el Espíritu lo examina todo, hasta las profundidades de Dios. ¹¹ En efecto, ¿quién conoce los pensamientos del ser humano sino su propio espíritu que está en él? Así mismo, nadie conoce los pensamientos de Dios sino el Espíritu de Dios. ¹² Nosotros no hemos recibido el espíritu del mundo, sino el Espíritu que procede de Dios, para que entendamos lo que por su gracia él nos ha concedido. ¹³ Esto es precisamente de lo que hablamos, no con las palabras que enseña la sabiduría humana, sino con las que enseña el Espíritu, de modo que expresamos verdades espirituales en términos espirituales. ¹⁴ El que no tiene el Espíritu^[e] no acepta lo que procede del Espíritu de Dios, pues para él es locura. No puede entenderlo, porque hay que discernirlo espiritualmente. ¹⁵ En cambio, el que es espiritual lo juzga todo, aunque él mismo no está sujeto al juicio de nadie, porque ¹⁶ «¿quién ha conocido la mente del Señor
    para que pueda instruirlo?» Nosotros, por nuestra parte, tenemos la mente de Cristo.

[Jesus said:] ¹³“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.   ¹⁴“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. ¹⁵No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. ¹⁶In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
  ¹⁷“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. ¹⁸For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. ¹⁹Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

¹³ »Ustedes son la sal de la tierra. Pero, si la sal se vuelve insípida, ¿cómo recobrará su sabor? Ya no sirve para nada, sino para que la gente la deseche y la pisotee. ¹⁴ »Ustedes son la luz del mundo. Una ciudad en lo alto de una colina no puede esconderse. ¹⁵ Ni se enciende una lámpara para cubrirla con un cajón. Por el contrario, se pone en la repisa para que alumbre a todos los que están en la casa. ¹⁶ Hagan brillar su luz delante de todos, para que ellos puedan ver las buenas obras de ustedes y alaben al Padre que está en el cielo. ¹⁷ »No piensen que he venido a anular la ley o los profetas; no he venido a anularlos, sino a darles cumplimiento. ¹⁸ Les aseguro que mientras existan el cielo y la tierra, ni una letra ni una tilde de la ley desaparecerán hasta que todo se haya cumplido. ¹⁹ Todo el que infrinja uno solo de estos mandamientos, por pequeño que sea, y enseñe a otros a hacer lo mismo, será considerado el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos; pero el que los practique y enseñe será considerado grande en el reino de los cielos. ²⁰ Porque les digo a ustedes que no van a entrar en el reino de los cielos a menos que su justicia supere a la de los fariseos y de los maestros de la ley.
