¹From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. ²The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” ³But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” ⁴So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” ⁵The Lord said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. ⁶I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. ⁷He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Toda la comunidad israelita partió del desierto de Sin por etapas, según lo había ordenado el Señor. Acamparon en Refidín, pero no había allí agua para que bebieran, ² así que altercaron con Moisés. —Danos agua para beber —le exigieron.
—¿Por qué pelean conmigo? —se defendió Moisés—. ¿Por qué provocan al Señor? ³ Pero los israelitas estaban sedientos, y murmuraron contra Moisés. —¿Para qué nos sacaste de Egipto? —reclamaban—. ¿Solo para matarnos de sed a nosotros, a nuestros hijos y a nuestro ganado? ⁴ Clamó entonces Moisés al Señor, y le dijo: —¿Qué voy a hacer con este pueblo? ¡Solo falta que me maten a pedradas! ⁵ —Adelántate al pueblo —le aconsejó el Señor— y llévate contigo a algunos ancianos de Israel, pero lleva también la vara con que golpeaste el Nilo. Ponte en marcha, ⁶ que yo estaré esperándote junto a la roca que está en Horeb. Aséstale un golpe a la roca, y de ella brotará agua para que beba el pueblo. Así lo hizo Moisés, a la vista de los ancianos de Israel. ⁷ Además, a ese lugar lo llamó Masá, y también Meribá, porque los israelitas habían altercado con él y provocado al Señor al decir: «¿Está o no está el Señor entre nosotros?»

¹Come, let us sing | to the Lord;
  let us shout for joy to the rock of  our salvation.
 ²Let us come before God’s presence  with thanksgiving
  and raise a loud shout to the Lord with psalms.
 ³For you, Lord, are a great God,
  and a great ruler above all gods.
 ⁴In your hand are the caverns of the earth;
  the heights of the hills are also yours.
 ⁵The sea is yours, for you made it,
  and your hands have molded the dry land.
 ⁶Come, let us worship and bow down,
  let us kneel before the Lord our maker. R
 ⁷For the Lord is our God, and we are the people of God’s pasture and the sheep of God’s hand.
  Oh, that today you would hear God’s voice!
 ⁸“Harden not your hearts,
  as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert.
 ⁹There your ancestors tested me,
  they put me to the test, though they had seen my works.
 ¹⁰Forty years I loathed that generation, saying,
  ‘The heart of this people goes astray; they do not know my ways.’
 ¹¹Indeed I swore  in my anger,
  ‘They shall never come to my rest.’ ”

Vengan, cantemos con júbilo al Señor;
    aclamemos a la roca de nuestra salvación.
² Lleguemos ante él con acción de gracias,
    aclamémoslo con cánticos. ³ Porque el Señor es el gran Dios,
    el gran Rey sobre todos los dioses.
⁴ En sus manos están los abismos de la tierra;

    «Jamás entrarán en mi reposo».

¹Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, ²through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. ³And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, ⁴and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, ⁵and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
  ⁶For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. ⁷Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. ⁸But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. ⁹Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. ¹⁰For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. ¹¹But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

En consecuencia, ya que hemos sido justificados mediante la fe, tenemos paz con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. ² También por medio de él, y mediante la fe, tenemos acceso a esta gracia en la cual nos mantenemos firmes. ⁹ Y ahora que hemos sido justificados por su sangre, ¡con cuánta más razón, por medio de él, seremos salvados del castigo de Dios! ¹⁰ Porque si, cuando éramos enemigos de Dios, fuimos reconciliados con él mediante la muerte de su Hijo, ¡con cuánta más razón, habiendo sido reconciliados, seremos salvados por su vida! ¹¹ Y no solo esto, sino que también nos regocijamos en Dios por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, pues gracias a él ya hemos recibido la reconciliación.

⁵[Jesus] came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.⁶Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
  ⁷A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” ⁸(His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) ⁹The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) ¹⁰Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” ¹¹The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? ¹²Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” ¹³Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” ¹⁵The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”
  ¹⁶Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” ¹⁷The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; ¹⁸for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” ¹⁹The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. ²⁰Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” ²¹Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. ²²You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. ²³But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. ²⁴God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” ²⁵The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” ²⁶Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.”
  ²⁷Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” ²⁸Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, ²⁹“Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” ³⁰They left the city and were on their way to him.
  ³¹Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” ³²But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” ³³So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” ³⁴Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. ³⁵Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. ³⁶The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. ³⁷For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ ³⁸I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
  ³⁹Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” ⁴⁰So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. ⁴¹And many more believed because of his word. ⁴²They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

⁵ llegó a un pueblo samaritano llamado Sicar, cerca del terreno que Jacob le había dado a su hijo José. ⁶ Allí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, fatigado del camino, se sentó junto al pozo. Era cerca del mediodía. ^7-8 Sus discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar comida. En eso llegó a sacar agua una mujer de Samaria, y Jesús le dijo: —Dame un poco de agua. ⁹ Pero, como los judíos no usan nada en común con los samaritanos, la mujer le respondió: —¿Cómo se te ocurre pedirme agua, si tú eres judío y yo soy samaritana? ¹⁰ —Si supieras lo que Dios puede dar, y conocieras al que te está pidiendo agua —contestó Jesús—, tú le habrías pedido a él, y él te habría dado agua que da vida. ¹¹ —Señor, ni siquiera tienes con qué sacar agua, y el pozo es muy hondo; ¿de dónde, pues, vas a sacar esa agua que da vida? ¹² ¿Acaso eres tú superior a nuestro padre Jacob, que nos dejó este pozo, del cual bebieron él, sus hijos y su ganado? ¹³ —Todo el que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed —respondió Jesús—, ¹⁴ pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré no volverá a tener sed jamás, sino que dentro de él esa agua se convertirá en un manantial del que brotará vida eterna. ¹⁵ —Señor, dame de esa agua para que no vuelva a tener sed ni siga viniendo aquí a sacarla. ¹⁶ —Ve a llamar a tu esposo, y vuelve acá —le dijo Jesús. ¹⁷ —No tengo esposo —respondió la mujer. —Bien has dicho que no tienes esposo. ¹⁸ Es cierto que has tenido cinco, y el que ahora tienes no es tu esposo. En esto has dicho la verdad. ¹⁹ —Señor, me doy cuenta de que tú eres profeta. ²⁰ Nuestros antepasados adoraron en este monte, pero ustedes los judíos dicen que el lugar donde debemos adorar está en Jerusalén. ²¹ —Créeme, mujer, que se acerca la hora en que ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén adorarán ustedes al Padre. ²² Ahora ustedes adoran lo que no conocen; nosotros adoramos lo que conocemos, porque la salvación proviene de los judíos. ²³ Pero se acerca la hora, y ha llegado ya, en que los verdaderos adoradores rendirán culto al Padre en espíritu y en verdad, porque así quiere el Padre que sean los que le adoren. ²⁴ Dios es espíritu, y quienes lo adoran deben hacerlo en espíritu y en verdad. ²⁵ —Sé que viene el Mesías, al que llaman el Cristo —respondió la mujer—. Yo les digo: ¡Abran los ojos y miren los campos sembrados! Ya la cosecha está madura; ³⁶ ya el segador recibe su salario y recoge el fruto para vida eterna. Ahora tanto el sembrador como el segador se alegran juntos. ³⁷ Porque como dice el refrán: “Uno es el que siembra y otro el que cosecha”. ³⁸ Yo los he enviado a ustedes a cosechar lo que no les costó ningún trabajo. Otros se han fatigado trabajando, y ustedes han cosechado el fruto de ese trabajo. ³⁹ Muchos de los samaritanos que vivían en aquel pueblo creyeron en él por el testimonio que daba la mujer: «Me dijo todo lo que he hecho». ⁴⁰ Así que cuando los samaritanos fueron a su encuentro le insistieron en que se quedara con ellos. Jesús permaneció allí dos días, ⁴¹ y muchos más llegaron a creer por lo que él mismo decía. ⁴² —Ya no creemos solo por lo que tú dijiste —le decían a la mujer—; ahora lo hemos oído nosotros mismos, y sabemos que verdaderamente este es el Salvador del mundo.

¹⁵The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. ¹⁶And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; ¹⁷but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” ^3:1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?” ²The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; ³but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’ ” ⁴But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die; ⁵for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” ⁶So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. ⁷Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

15 Dios el Señor tomó al hombre y lo puso en el jardín del Edén para que lo cultivara y lo cuidara, 16 y le dio este mandato: «Puedes comer de todos los árboles del jardín, 17 pero del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal no deberás comer. El día que de él comas, ciertamente morirás». La serpiente era más astuta que todos los animales del campo que Dios el Señor había hecho, así que le preguntó a la mujer: —¿Es verdad que Dios les dijo que no comieran de ningún árbol del jardín? ² —Podemos comer del fruto de todos los árboles —respondió la mujer—. ³ Pero, en cuanto al fruto del árbol que está en medio del jardín, Dios nos ha dicho: “No coman de ese árbol, ni lo toquen; de lo contrario, morirán”. ⁴ Pero la serpiente le dijo a la mujer: —¡No es cierto, no van a morir! ⁵ Dios sabe muy bien que, cuando coman de ese árbol, se les abrirán los ojos y llegarán a ser como Dios, conocedores del bien y del mal. ⁶ La mujer vio que el fruto del árbol era bueno para comer, y que tenía buen aspecto y era deseable para adquirir sabiduría, así que tomó de su fruto y comió. Luego le dio a su esposo, y también él comió. ⁷ En ese momento se les abrieron los ojos, y tomaron conciencia de su desnudez. Por eso, para cubrirse entretejieron hojas de higuera.

¹Happy are they whose transgressions  are forgiven,
  and whose sin is put away!
 ²Happy are they to whom the Lord imputes no guilt,
  and in whose spirit there  is no guile!
 ³While I held my tongue, my bones withered away,
  because of my groaning all day long.
 ⁴For your hand was heavy upon me day and night;
  my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer. 
 ⁵Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not conceal my guilt.
  I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin.
 ⁶Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble;
  when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them.
 ⁷You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble;
  you surround me with shouts of deliverance.
 ⁸“I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go;
  I will guide you with my eye. 
 ⁹Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding;
  who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will  not stay near you.”
 ¹⁰Great are the tribulations of the wicked;
  but mercy embraces those who trust  in the Lord.
 ¹¹Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice  in the Lord;
  shout for joy, all who are true of heart.

    en momentos de angustia;
caudalosas aguas podrán desbordarse,
    pero a ellos no los alcanzarán. ⁷ Tú eres mi refugio;
    tú me protegerás del peligro
    y me rodearás con cánticos de liberación. Selah ⁸ El Señor dice:
«Yo te instruiré,
    yo te mostraré el camino que debes seguir;
    yo te daré consejos y velaré por ti.
⁹ No seas como el mulo o el caballo,
    que no tienen discernimiento,
y cuyo brío hay que domar con brida y freno,
    para acercarlos a ti». ¹⁰ Muchas son las calamidades de los malvados,
    pero el gran amor del Señor
    envuelve a los que en él confían. ¹¹ ¡Alégrense, ustedes los justos;
    regocíjense en el Señor!

    los rectos de corazón!

¹²Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned—¹³sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. ¹⁴Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. ¹⁵But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. ¹⁶And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. ¹⁷If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. ¹⁸Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. ¹⁹For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

¹² Por medio de un solo hombre el pecado entró en el mundo, y por medio del pecado entró la muerte; fue así como la muerte pasó a toda la humanidad, porque todos pecaron. ¹³ Antes de promulgarse la ley, ya existía el pecado en el mundo. ¹Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. ²He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. ³The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone,
  but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” ⁵Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, ⁶saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
 ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
  and ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
 so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ” ⁷Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” ⁸Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; ⁹and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God,
  and serve only him.’ ” ¹¹Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Luego el Espíritu llevó a Jesús al desierto para que el diablo lo sometiera a tentación. ² Después de ayunar cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, tuvo hambre. ³ El tentador se le acercó y le propuso: —Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ordena a estas piedras que se conviertan en pan. ⁴ Jesús le respondió: —Escrito está: “No solo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”. ⁵ Luego el diablo lo llevó a la ciudad santa e hizo que se pusiera de pie sobre la parte más alta del templo, y le dijo: ⁶ —Si eres el Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo.
