¹Comfort, O comfort my people,
  says your God.
²Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
  and cry to her
 that she has served her term,
  that her penalty is paid,
 that she has received from the Lord’s hand
  double for all her sins.

³A voice cries out:
 “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord,
  make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
⁴Every valley shall be lifted up,
  and every mountain and hill be made low;
 the uneven ground shall become level,
  and the rough places a plain.
⁵Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
  and all people shall see it together,
  for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

⁶A voice says, “Cry out!”
  And I said, “What shall I cry?”
 All people are grass,
  their constancy is like the flower of the field.
⁷The grass withers, the flower fades,
  when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
  surely the people are grass.

  but the word of our God will stand forever.
⁹Get you up to a high mountain,
  O Zion, herald of good tidings;
 lift up your voice with strength,
  O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,
  lift it up, do not fear;
 say to the cities of Judah,
  “Here is your God!”
¹⁰See, the Lord God comes with might,
  and his arm rules for him;
 his reward is with him,
  and his recompense before him.
¹¹He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
  he will gather the lambs in his arms,
 and carry them in his bosom,
  and gently lead the mother sheep.

¡Consuelen, consuelen a mi pueblo!

² Hablen con cariño a Jerusalén,

 ¹You have been gracious to your land, O Lord;
  you have restored the good fortune of Jacob.
 ²You have forgiven the iniquity of your people
  and blotted out all their sins.
 ⁸I will listen to what the Lord God is saying;
  for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you.
 ⁹Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you,
  that your glory may dwell in our land. 
 ¹⁰Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together;
  righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
 ¹¹Faithfulness shall spring up from the earth,
  and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
 ¹²The Lord will indeed grant prosperity,
  and our land will yield its increase.
 ¹³Righteousness shall go before the Lord
  and shall prepare for God a pathway.

Señor, tú has sido bondadoso con esta tierra tuya
    al restaurar a Jacob;
² perdonaste la iniquidad de tu pueblo
    y cubriste todos sus pecados; 

⁸ Voy a escuchar lo que Dios el Señor dice:
    él promete paz a su pueblo y a sus fieles,
    siempre y cuando no se vuelvan a la necedad.
⁹ Muy cercano está para salvar a los que le temen,
    para establecer su gloria en nuestra tierra.

¹⁰ El amor y la verdad se encontrarán;
    se besarán la paz y la justicia.
¹¹ De la tierra brotará la verdad,

⁸Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. ⁹The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. ¹⁰But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.
¹¹Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, ¹²waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? ¹³But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

¹⁴Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; ^15aand regard the patience of our Lord as salvation

⁸ Pero no olviden, queridos hermanos, que para el Señor un día es como mil años, y mil años como un día. ⁹ El Señor no tarda en cumplir su promesa, según entienden algunos la tardanza. Más bien, él tiene paciencia con ustedes, porque no quiere que nadie perezca, sino que todos se arrepientan.

¹⁰ Pero el día del Señor vendrá como un ladrón. En aquel día los cielos desaparecerán con un estruendo espantoso, los elementos serán destruidos por el fuego, y la tierra, con todo lo que hay en ella, será quemada.

¹¹ Ya que todo será destruido de esa manera, ¿no deberían vivir ustedes como Dios manda, siguiendo una conducta intachable ¹² y esperando ansiosamente la venida del día de Dios? Ese día los cielos serán destruidos por el fuego, y los elementos se derretirán con el calor de las llamas. ¹³ Pero, según su promesa, esperamos un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva, en los que habite la justicia.

¹⁴ Por eso, queridos hermanos, mientras esperan estos acontecimientos, esfuércense para que Dios los halle sin mancha y sin defecto, y en paz con él. ¹⁵ Tengan presente que la paciencia de nuestro Señor significa salvación, tal como les escribió también nuestro querido hermano Pablo, con la sabiduría que Dios le dio.

¹The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
  ²As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,
 “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
  who will prepare your way;
 ³the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
  ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
  make his paths straight,’ ”
⁴John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ⁵And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁶Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. ⁷He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. ⁸I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

⁴ Así se presentó Juan, bautizando en el desierto y predicando el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados. ⁵ Toda la gente de la región de Judea y de la ciudad de Jerusalén acudía a él. Cuando confesaban sus pecados, él los bautizaba en el río Jordán. ⁶ La ropa de Juan estaba hecha de pelo de camello. Llevaba puesto un cinturón de cuero, y comía langostas y miel silvestre. ⁷ Predicaba de esta manera: «Después de mí viene uno más poderoso que yo; ni siquiera merezco agacharme para desatar la correa de sus sandalias. ⁸ Yo los he bautizado a ustedes con agua, pero él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo».

 ¹O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,
  so that the mountains would quake at your presence—
 ²as when fire kindles brushwood
  and the fire causes water to boil—
 to make your name known to your adversaries,
  so that the nations might tremble at your presence!
 ³When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,
  you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
 ⁴From ages past no one has heard,
  no ear has perceived,
 no eye has seen any God besides you,
  who works for those who wait for him.
 ⁵You meet those who gladly do right,
  those who remember you in your ways.
 But you were angry, and we sinned;
  because you hid yourself we transgressed.
 ⁶We have all become like one who is unclean,
  and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth.
 We all fade like a leaf,
  and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
 ⁷There is no one who calls on your name,
  or attempts to take hold of you;
 for you have hidden your face from us,
  and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
 ⁸Yet, O Lord, you are our Father;
  we are the clay, and you are our potter;
  we are all the work of your hand.
 ⁹Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord,
  and do not remember iniquity forever.
  Now consider, we are all your people.

¡Ojalá rasgaras los cielos, y descendieras!
    ¡Las montañas temblarían ante ti,
² como cuando el fuego enciende la leña
    y hace que hierva el agua!
Así darías a conocer tu nombre entre tus enemigos,
    y ante ti temblarían las naciones.
³ Hiciste portentos inesperados cuando descendiste;
    ante tu presencia temblaron las montañas.
⁴ Fuera de ti, desde tiempos antiguos
    nadie ha escuchado ni percibido,
ni ojo alguno ha visto,
    a un Dios que, como tú,
    actúe en favor de quienes en él confían.
⁵ Sales al encuentro de los que, alegres,
    practican la justicia y recuerdan tus caminos.
Pero te enojas si persistimos
    en desviarnos de ellos.
    ¿Cómo podremos ser salvos?
⁶ Todos somos como gente impura;
    todos nuestros actos de justicia
    son como trapos de inmundicia.
Todos nos marchitamos como hojas;
    nuestras iniquidades nos arrastran como el viento.
⁷ Nadie invoca tu nombre,
    ni se esfuerza por aferrarse a ti.
Pues nos has dado la espalda
    y nos has entregado en poder de nuestras iniquidades.

⁸ A pesar de todo, Señor, tú eres nuestro Padre;
    nosotros somos el barro, y tú el alfarero.
    Todos somos obra de tu mano.
⁹ No te enojes demasiado, Señor;
    no te acuerdes siempre de nuestras iniquidades.
¡Considera, por favor,
    que todos somos tu pueblo!

¹Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock;
  shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim.
 ²In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh,
  stir up your strength and come to help us.
 ³Restore us, O God;
  let your face shine upon us, and we shall be saved.
 ⁴O Lord God of hosts,
  how long will your anger fume when your people pray? 
 ⁵You have fed them with the bread of tears;
  you have given them bowls of tears to drink.
 ⁶You have made us the derision of our neighbors,
  and our enemies laugh us to scorn.
 ⁷Restore us, O God of hosts;
  let your face shine upon us, and we shall be saved.
 ¹⁷Let your hand be upon the one at your right hand,
  the one you have made so strong for yourself. 
 ¹⁸And so will we never turn a-way from you;
  give us life, that we may call upon your name.

Pastor de Israel,
    tú que guías a José como a un rebaño,

⁴I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, ⁵for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind—⁶just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you—⁷so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁸He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

³ Que Dios nuestro Padre y el Señor Jesucristo les concedan gracia y paz.

⁴ Siempre doy gracias a Dios por ustedes, pues él, en Cristo Jesús, les ha dado su gracia. ⁵ Unidos a Cristo ustedes se han llenado de toda riqueza, tanto en palabra como en conocimiento. ⁶ Así se ha confirmado en ustedes nuestro testimonio acerca de Cristo, ⁷ de modo que no les falta ningún don espiritual mientras esperan con ansias que se manifieste nuestro Señor Jesucristo. ⁸ Él los mantendrá firmes hasta el fin, para que sean irreprochables en el día de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. ⁹ Fiel es Dios, quien los ha llamado a tener comunión con su Hijo Jesucristo, nuestro Señor.

[Jesus said:] ²⁴“In those days, after that suffering,
 the sun will be darkened,
  and the moon will not give its light,
 ²⁵and the stars will be falling from heaven,
  and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
²⁶Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. ²⁷Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
  ²⁸“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. ²⁹So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. ³⁰Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. ³¹Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
  ³²“But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. ³³Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. ³⁴It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. ³⁵Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, ³⁶or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. ³⁷And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

²⁴ »Pero en aquellos días, después de esa tribulación,

»“se oscurecerá el sol
    y no brillará más la luna;
²⁵ las estrellas caerán del cielo
    y los cuerpos celestes serán sacudidos”.

²⁶ »Verán entonces al Hijo del hombre venir en las nubes con gran poder y gloria. ²⁷ Y él enviará a sus ángeles para reunir de los cuatro vientos a los elegidos, desde los confines de la tierra hasta los confines del cielo.

²⁸ »Aprendan de la higuera esta lección: Tan pronto como se ponen tiernas sus ramas y brotan sus hojas, ustedes saben que el verano está cerca. ²⁹ Igualmente, cuando vean que suceden estas cosas, sepan que el tiempo está cerca, a las puertas. ³⁰ Les aseguro que no pasará esta generación hasta que todas estas cosas sucedan. ³¹ El cielo y la tierra pasarán, pero mis palabras jamás pasarán.

³² »Pero, en cuanto al día y la hora, nadie lo sabe, ni siquiera los ángeles en el cielo, ni el Hijo, sino solo el Padre. ³³ ¡Estén alerta! ¡Vigilen! Porque ustedes no saben cuándo llegará ese momento. ³⁴ Es como cuando un hombre sale de viaje y deja su casa al cuidado de sus siervos, cada uno con su tarea, y le manda al portero que vigile.

³⁵ »Por lo tanto, manténganse despiertos, porque no saben cuándo volverá el dueño de la casa, si al atardecer, o a la medianoche, o al canto del gallo, o al amanecer; ³⁶ no sea que venga de repente y los encuentre dormidos. ³⁷ Lo que les digo a ustedes, se lo digo a todos: ¡Manténganse despiertos!»

¹¹Thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. ¹²As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. ¹³I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. ¹⁴I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. ¹⁵I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. ¹⁶I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.
  ²⁰Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. ²¹Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, ²²I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep.
  ²³I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. ²⁴And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken.

¹¹ »”Así dice el Señor omnipotente: Yo mismo me encargaré de buscar y de cuidar a mi rebaño. ¹² Como un pastor que cuida de sus ovejas cuando están dispersas, así me ocuparé de mis ovejas y las rescataré de todos los lugares donde, en un día oscuro y de nubarrones, se hayan dispersado. ¹³ Yo las sacaré de entre las naciones; las reuniré de los países, y las llevaré a su tierra. Las apacentaré en los montes de Israel, en los vados y en todos los poblados del país. ¹⁴ Las haré pastar en los mejores pastos, y su aprisco estará en los montes altos de Israel. Allí descansarán en un buen lugar de pastoreo y se alimentarán de los mejores pastos de los montes de Israel. ¹⁵ Yo mismo apacentaré mi rebaño, y lo llevaré a descansar. Lo afirma el Señor omnipotente. ¹⁶ Buscaré a las ovejas perdidas, recogeré a las extraviadas, vendaré a las heridas y fortaleceré a las débiles, pero exterminaré a las ovejas gordas y robustas. Yo las pastorearé con justicia.

¹Come, let us sing to the Lord;
  let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation.
 ²Let us come before God’s presence with thanksgiving
  and raise a loud shout to the Lord with psalms.
 ³For you, Lord, are a great God,
  and a great ruler above all gods.
 ⁴In your hand are the caverns of the earth;
  the heights of the hills are also yours. 
 ⁵The sea is yours, for you made it,
  and your hands have molded the dry land.
 ⁶Come, let us worship and bow down,
  let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
 ^7aFor the Lord is our God,
  and we are the people of God’s pasture and the sheep of God’s hand.

Vengan, cantemos con júbilo al Señor;
    aclamemos a la roca de nuestra salvación.
² Lleguemos ante él con acción de gracias,
    aclamémoslo con cánticos.

³ Porque el Señor es el gran Dios,
    el gran Rey sobre todos los dioses.

¹⁵I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason ¹⁶I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. ¹⁷I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, ¹⁸so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, ¹⁹and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. ²⁰God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, ²¹far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. ²²And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, ²³which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

¹⁵ Por eso yo, por mi parte, desde que me enteré de la fe que tienen en el Señor Jesús y del amor que demuestran por todos los santos, ¹⁶ no he dejado de dar gracias por ustedes al recordarlos en mis oraciones. ¹⁷ Pido que el Dios de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el Padre glorioso, les dé el Espíritu de sabiduría y de revelación, para que lo conozcan mejor. ¹⁸ Pido también que les sean iluminados los ojos del corazón para que sepan a qué esperanza él los ha llamado, cuál es la riqueza de su gloriosa herencia entre los santos, ¹⁹ y cuán incomparable es la grandeza de su poder a favor de los que creemos. Ese poder es la fuerza grandiosa y eficaz ²⁰ que Dios ejerció en Cristo cuando lo resucitó de entre los muertos y lo sentó a su derecha en las regiones celestiales, ²¹ muy por encima de todo gobierno y autoridad, poder y dominio, y de cualquier otro nombre que se invoque, no solo en este mundo, sino también en el venidero. ²² Dios sometió todas las cosas al dominio de Cristo,^[a] y lo dio como cabeza de todo a la iglesia. ²³ Esta, que es su cuerpo, es la plenitud de aquel que lo llena todo por completo.

[Jesus said to the disciples:] ³¹“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. ³²All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, ³³and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. ³⁴Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; ³⁵for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, ³⁶I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ ³⁷Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? ³⁸And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? ³⁹And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ ⁴⁰And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me.’ ⁴¹Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; ⁴²for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, ⁴³I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ ⁴⁴Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ ⁴⁵Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ ⁴⁶And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

³¹ »Cuando el Hijo del hombre venga en su gloria, con todos sus ángeles, se sentará en su trono glorioso. ³² Todas las naciones se reunirán delante de él, y él separará a unos de otros, como separa el pastor las ovejas de las cabras. ³³ Pondrá las ovejas a su derecha, y las cabras a su izquierda.

³⁴ »Entonces dirá el Rey a los que estén a su derecha: “Vengan ustedes, a quienes mi Padre ha bendecido; reciban su herencia, el reino preparado para ustedes desde la creación del mundo. ³⁵ Porque tuve hambre, y ustedes me dieron de comer; tuve sed, y me dieron de beber; fui forastero, y me dieron alojamiento; ³⁶ necesité ropa, y me vistieron; estuve enfermo, y me atendieron; estuve en la cárcel, y me visitaron”. ³⁷ Y le contestarán los justos: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento y te alimentamos, o sediento y te dimos de beber? ³⁸ ¿Cuándo te vimos como forastero y te dimos alojamiento, o necesitado de ropa y te vestimos? ³⁹ ¿Cuándo te vimos enfermo o en la cárcel y te visitamos?” ⁴⁰ El Rey les responderá: “Les aseguro que todo lo que hicieron por uno de mis hermanos, aun por el más pequeño, lo hicieron por mí”.

⁴¹ »Luego dirá a los que estén a su izquierda: “Apártense de mí, malditos, al fuego eterno preparado para el diablo y sus ángeles. ⁴² Porque tuve hambre, y ustedes no me dieron nada de comer; tuve sed, y no me dieron nada de beber; ⁴³ fui forastero, y no me dieron alojamiento; necesité ropa, y no me vistieron; estuve enfermo y en la cárcel, y no me atendieron”. ⁴⁴ Ellos también le contestarán: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento o sediento, o como forastero, o necesitado de ropa, o enfermo, o en la cárcel, y no te ayudamos?” ⁴⁵ Él les responderá: “Les aseguro que todo lo que no hicieron por el más pequeño de mis hermanos, tampoco lo hicieron por mí”.

⁴⁶ »Aquellos irán al castigo eterno, y los justos a la vida eterna».

⁷Be silent before the Lord God!
  For the day of the Lord is at hand;
 the Lord has prepared a sacrifice,
  he has consecrated his guests.

¹²At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
  and I will punish the people
 who rest complacently on their dregs,
  those who say in their hearts,
 “The Lord will not do good,
  nor will he do harm.”
¹³Their wealth shall be plundered,
  and their houses laid waste.
 Though they build houses,
  they shall not inhabit them;
 though they plant vineyards,
  they shall not drink wine from them.

¹⁴The great day of the Lord is near,
  near and hastening fast;
 the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter,
  the warrior cries aloud there.
¹⁵That day will be a day of wrath,
  a day of distress and anguish,
 a day of ruin and devastation,
  a day of darkness and gloom,
 a day of clouds and thick darkness,
¹⁶a day of trumpet blast and battle cry
 against the fortified cities
  and against the lofty battlements.

¹⁷I will bring such distress upon people
  that they shall walk like the blind;
  because they have sinned against the Lord,
 their blood shall be poured out like dust,
  and their flesh like dung.
¹⁸Neither their silver nor their gold
  will be able to save them
  on the day of the Lord’s wrath;
 in the fire of his passion
  the whole earth shall be consumed;
 for a full, a terrible end
  he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

⁷ ¡Silencio ante el Señor omnipotente,
    porque cercano está el día del Señor;
ha preparado el Señor un sacrificio
    y ha purificado a sus invitados!

¹² En aquel tiempo registraré Jerusalén con lámparas
    para castigar a los que reposan tranquilos
    como vino en su sedimento,
a los que piensan: “El Señor no va a hacer nada,
    ni para bien ni para mal”.
¹³ En botín se convertirán sus riquezas,
    sus casas en desolación:
“Edificarán casas,
    pero no las habitarán;
plantarán viñas,
    pero del vino no beberán”.

¹⁴ »Ya se acerca el gran día del Señor;
    a toda prisa se acerca.
El estruendo del día del Señor será amargo,
    y aun el más valiente gritará.
¹⁵ Día de ira será aquel día,
    día de acoso y angustia,
día de devastación y ruina,
    día de tinieblas y penumbra,
día de niebla y densos nubarrones,
¹⁶     día de trompeta y grito de batalla
contra las ciudades fortificadas,
    contra los altos bastiones.
¹⁷ De tal manera acosaré a los hombres
    que andarán como ciegos,
    porque pecaron contra el Señor.
Su sangre será derramada como polvo
    y sus entrañas como estiércol.
¹⁸ No los podrán librar
    ni su plata ni su oro
    en el día de la ira del Señor.
En el fuego de su celo
    será toda la tierra consumida;
en un instante reducirá a la nada
    a todos los habitantes de la tierra».

 ¹Lord, you have been our refuge
  from one generation to another.
 ²Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born,
  from age to age you are God.
 ³You turn us back to the dust and say,
  “Turn back, O children of earth.”
 ⁴For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past
  and like a watch in the night; 
 ⁵you sweep them away  like a dream,
  they fade away suddenly like the grass:
 ⁶in the morning it is green and flourishes;
  in the evening it is dried up and withered.
 ⁷For we are consumed by your anger;
  we are afraid because of your wrath.
 ⁸Our iniquities you have set before you,
  and our secret sins in the light of your countenance. 
 ⁹When you are angry, all our days are gone;
  we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
 ¹⁰The span of our life is seventy years, perhaps in strength even eighty;
  yet the sum of them is but labor and sorrow, for they pass away quickly and we are gone.
 ¹¹Who regards the power of your wrath?
  Who rightly fears your indignation?
  ¹²So teach us to number our days
  that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

Señor, tú has sido nuestro refugio
    generación tras generación.
² Desde antes que nacieran los montes
    y que crearas la tierra y el mundo,
desde los tiempos antiguos
    y hasta los tiempos postreros,
    tú eres Dios.

³ Tú haces que los hombres vuelvan al polvo,
    cuando dices: «¡Vuélvanse al polvo, mortales!»
⁴ Mil años, para ti, son como el día de ayer, que ya pasó;
    son como unas cuantas horas de la noche.
⁵ Arrasas a los mortales. Son como un sueño.
    Nacen por la mañana, como la hierba
⁶ que al amanecer brota lozana
    y por la noche ya está marchita y seca.

⁷ Tu ira en verdad nos consume,
    tu indignación nos aterra.
⁸ Ante ti has puesto nuestras iniquidades;
    a la luz de tu presencia, nuestros pecados secretos.
⁹ Por causa de tu ira se nos va la vida entera;
    se esfuman nuestros años como un suspiro.
¹⁰ Algunos llegamos hasta los setenta años,
    quizás alcancemos hasta los ochenta,
    si las fuerzas nos acompañan.
Tantos años de vida, sin embargo,
    solo traen pesadas cargas y calamidades:
    pronto pasan, y con ellos pasamos nosotros.

¹¹ ¿Quién puede comprender el furor de tu enojo?

¹Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. ²For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ³When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! ⁴But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; ⁵for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. ⁶So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; ⁷for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. ⁸But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. ⁹For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁰who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. ¹¹Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

Ahora bien, hermanos, ustedes no necesitan que se les escriba acerca de tiempos y fechas, ² porque ya saben que el día del Señor llegará como ladrón en la noche. ³ Cuando estén diciendo: «Paz y seguridad», vendrá de improviso sobre ellos la destrucción, como le llegan a la mujer encinta los dolores de parto. De ninguna manera podrán escapar.

⁴ Ustedes, en cambio, hermanos, no están en la oscuridad para que ese día los sorprenda como un ladrón. ⁵ Todos ustedes son hijos de la luz y del día. No somos de la noche ni de la oscuridad. ⁶ No debemos, pues, dormirnos como los demás, sino mantenernos alerta y en nuestro sano juicio. ⁷ Los que duermen, de noche duermen, y los que se emborrachan, de noche se emborrachan. ⁸ Nosotros que somos del día, por el contrario, estemos siempre en nuestro sano juicio, protegidos por la coraza de la fe y del amor, y por el casco de la esperanza de salvación; ⁹ pues Dios no nos destinó a sufrir el castigo, sino a recibir la salvación por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. ¹⁰ Él murió por nosotros para que, en la vida o en la muerte, vivamos junto con él. ¹¹ Por eso, anímense y edifíquense unos a otros, tal como lo vienen haciendo.

 ¹⁴“For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; ¹⁵to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. ¹⁶The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. ¹⁷In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. ¹⁸But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. ¹⁹After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. ²⁰Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ ²¹His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ ²²And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’ ²³His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ ²⁴Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; ²⁵so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ ²⁶But his master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? ²⁷Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. ²⁸So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. ²⁹For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. ³⁰As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ ”

¹⁴ »El reino de los cielos será también como un hombre que, al emprender un viaje, llamó a sus siervos y les encargó sus bienes. ¹⁵ A uno le dio cinco mil monedas de oro, a otro dos mil y a otro solo mil, a cada uno según su capacidad. Luego se fue de viaje. ¹⁶ El que había recibido las cinco mil fue en seguida y negoció con ellas y ganó otras cinco mil. ¹⁷ Así mismo, el que recibió dos mil ganó otras dos mil. ¹⁸ Pero el que había recibido mil fue, cavó un hoyo en la tierra y escondió el dinero de su señor.

¹⁹ »Después de mucho tiempo volvió el señor de aquellos siervos y arregló cuentas con ellos. ²⁰ El que había recibido las cinco mil monedas llegó con las otras cinco mil. “Señor —dijo—, usted me encargó cinco mil monedas. Mire, he ganado otras cinco mil”. ²¹ Su señor le respondió: “¡Hiciste bien, siervo bueno y fiel! En lo poco has sido fiel; te pondré a cargo de mucho más. ¡Ven a compartir la felicidad de tu señor!” ²² Llegó también el que recibió dos mil monedas. “Señor —informó—, usted me encargó dos mil monedas. Mire, he ganado otras dos mil”. ²³ Su señor le respondió: “¡Hiciste bien, siervo bueno y fiel! Has sido fiel en lo poco; te pondré a cargo de mucho más. ¡Ven a compartir la felicidad de tu señor!”

²⁴ »Después llegó el que había recibido solo mil monedas. “Señor —explicó—, yo sabía que usted es un hombre duro, que cosecha donde no ha sembrado y recoge donde no ha esparcido. ²⁵ Así que tuve miedo, y fui y escondí su dinero en la tierra. Mire, aquí tiene lo que es suyo”. ²⁶ Pero su señor le contestó: “¡Siervo malo y perezoso! ¿Así que sabías que cosecho donde no he sembrado y recojo donde no he esparcido? ²⁷ Pues debías haber depositado mi dinero en el banco, para que a mi regreso lo hubiera recibido con intereses.

²⁸ »”Quítenle las mil monedas y dénselas al que tiene las diez mil. ²⁹ Porque a todo el que tiene, se le dará más, y tendrá en abundancia. Al que no tiene se le quitará hasta lo que tiene. ³⁰ Y a ese siervo inútil échenlo afuera, a la oscuridad, donde habrá llanto y rechinar de dientes”.

¹⁸Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord!
  Why do you want the day of the Lord?
 It is darkness, not light;
¹⁹as if someone fled from a lion,
  and was met by a bear;
 or went into the house and rested a hand against the wall,
  and was bitten by a snake.
²⁰Is not the day of the Lord darkness, not light,
  and gloom with no brightness in it?

²¹I hate, I despise your festivals,
  and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
²²Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings,
  I will not accept them;
 and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals
  I will not look upon.
²³Take away from me the noise of your songs;
  I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
²⁴But let justice roll down like waters,

¹⁸ ¡Ay de los que suspiran
    por el día del Señor!
¿De qué les servirá ese día
    si va a ser de oscuridad y no de luz?
¹⁹ Será como cuando alguien huye de un león
    y se le viene encima un oso,
o como cuando al llegar a su casa,
    apoya la mano en la pared
    y lo muerde una serpiente.
²⁰ ¿No será el día del Señor de oscuridad y no de luz?
    ¡Será por cierto sombrío y sin resplandor!

²¹ «Detesto y aborrezco sus fiestas religiosas;
    no me agradan sus cultos solemnes.
²² Aunque me traigan holocaustos y ofrendas de cereal,
    no los aceptaré,
ni prestaré atención
    a los sacrificios de comunión de novillos cebados.
²³ Aleja de mí el bullicio de tus canciones;
    no quiero oír la música de tus cítaras.
²⁴ ¡Pero que fluya el derecho como las aguas,
    y la justicia como arroyo inagotable!

¹Be pleased, O God, to deliver me;
  O Lord, make haste to help me.
 ²Let those who seek my life be put to shame and confounded;
  let those who take pleasure in my misfortune draw back and be disgraced. 
 ³Let those who say to me “Aha!” and gloat over me
  turn back because of their shame.
 ⁴Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
  let those who love your salvation say forever, “Great is the Lord!”
 ⁵But as for me, I am poor and needy; come to me quickly, O God.
  You are my helper and my deliverer; O Lord, do not tarry.

Apresúrate, oh Dios, a rescatarme;
    ¡apresúrate, Señor, a socorrerme!
² Que sean avergonzados y confundidos
    los que procuran matarme.
Que retrocedan humillados
    todos los que desean mi ruina.
³ Que vuelvan sobre sus pasos, avergonzados,
    todos los que se burlan de mí.
⁴ Pero que todos los que te buscan
    se alegren en ti y se regocijen;

    ¡ven pronto a mí, oh Dios!
Tú eres mi socorro y mi libertador;

¹³We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. ¹⁴For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. ¹⁵For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. ¹⁶For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. ¹⁷Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. ¹⁸Therefore encourage one another with these words.

¹³ Hermanos, no queremos que ignoren lo que va a pasar con los que ya han muerto, para que no se entristezcan como esos otros que no tienen esperanza. ¹⁴ ¿Acaso no creemos que Jesús murió y resucitó? Así también Dios resucitará con Jesús a los que han muerto en unión con él. ¹⁵ Conforme a lo dicho por el Señor, afirmamos que nosotros, los que estemos vivos y hayamos quedado hasta la venida del Señor, de ninguna manera nos adelantaremos a los que hayan muerto. ¹⁶ El Señor mismo descenderá del cielo con voz de mando, con voz de arcángel y con trompeta de Dios, y los muertos en Cristo resucitarán primero. ¹⁷ Luego los que estemos vivos, los que hayamos quedado, seremos arrebatados junto con ellos en las nubes para encontrarnos con el Señor en el aire. Y así estaremos con el Señor para siempre. ¹⁸ Por lo tanto, anímense unos a otros con estas palabras.

¹“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. ²Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. ³When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; ⁴but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. ⁵As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. ⁶But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ ⁷Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. ⁸The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ ⁹But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ ¹⁰And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. ¹¹Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ ¹²But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ ¹³Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

El reino de los cielos será entonces como diez jóvenes solteras que tomaron sus lámparas y salieron a recibir al novio. ² Cinco de ellas eran insensatas y cinco prudentes. ³ Las insensatas llevaron sus lámparas, pero no se abastecieron de aceite. ⁴ En cambio, las prudentes llevaron vasijas de aceite junto con sus lámparas. ⁵ Y, como el novio tardaba en llegar, a todas les dio sueño y se durmieron. ⁶ A medianoche se oyó un grito: “¡Ahí viene el novio! ¡Salgan a recibirlo!” ⁷ Entonces todas las jóvenes se despertaron y se pusieron a preparar sus lámparas. ⁸ Las insensatas dijeron a las prudentes: “Dennos un poco de su aceite porque nuestras lámparas se están apagando”. ⁹ “No —respondieron estas—, porque así no va a alcanzar ni para nosotras ni para ustedes. Es mejor que vayan a los que venden aceite, y compren para ustedes mismas”. ¹⁰ Pero mientras iban a comprar el aceite llegó el novio, y las jóvenes que estaban preparadas entraron con él al banquete de bodas. Y se cerró la puerta. ¹¹ Después llegaron también las otras. “¡Señor! ¡Señor! —suplicaban—. ¡Ábrenos la puerta!” ¹² “¡No, no las conozco!”, respondió él.

¹³ »Por tanto —agregó Jesús—, manténganse despiertos porque no saben ni el día ni la hora.
