⁸[Adam and Eve] heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.⁹But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” ¹⁰He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” ¹¹He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” ¹²The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” ¹³Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.” ¹⁴The Lord God said to the serpent,
 “Because you have done this,
  cursed are you among all animals
  and among all wild creatures;
 upon your belly you shall go,
  and dust you shall eat
  all the days of your life.
 ¹⁵I will put enmity between you and the woman,
  and between your offspring and hers;
 he will strike your head,
  and you will strike his heel.”

Cuando el día comenzó a refrescar, el hombre y la mujer oyeron que Dios el Señor andaba recorriendo el jardín; entonces corrieron a esconderse entre los árboles, para que Dios no los viera. ⁹ Pero Dios el Señor llamó al hombre y le dijo:

¹⁰ El hombre contestó:

—Escuché que andabas por el jardín, y tuve miedo porque estoy desnudo. Por eso me escondí.

¹¹ —¿Y quién te ha dicho que estás desnudo? —le preguntó Dios—. ¿Acaso has comido del fruto del árbol que yo te prohibí comer?

¹² Él respondió:

—La mujer que me diste por compañera me dio de ese fruto, y yo lo comí.

¹³ Entonces Dios el Señor le preguntó a la mujer:

—¿Qué es lo que has hecho?

—La serpiente me engañó, y comí —contestó ella.

¹⁴ Dios el Señor dijo entonces a la serpiente:

«Por causa de lo que has hecho,
    ¡maldita serás entre todos los animales,
    tanto domésticos como salvajes!
Te arrastrarás sobre tu vientre,
    y comerás polvo todos los días de tu vida.
¹⁵ Pondré enemistad entre tú y la mujer,
    y entre tu simiente y la de ella;
su simiente te aplastará la cabeza,
    pero tú le morderás el talón».

  I cry to you, O Lord;
 ²O Lord, hear my voice!
  Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
 ³If you were to keep watch over sins,
  O Lord, who could stand?
 ⁴Yet with you is forgiveness,
  in order that you may be feared. 
 ⁵I wait for you, O Lord; my soul waits;
  in your word is my hope.
 ⁶My soul waits for the Lord more than those who keep watch for the morning,

 ⁷O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is steadfast love;

¹³Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—“I believed, and so I spoke”—we also believe, and so we speak, ¹⁴because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. ¹⁵Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

¹⁶So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. ¹⁷For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, ¹⁸because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
^5:1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

¹³ Escrito está: «Creí, y por eso hablé». Con ese mismo espíritu de fe también nosotros creemos, y por eso hablamos. ¹⁴ Pues sabemos que aquel que resucitó al Señor Jesús nos resucitará también a nosotros con él y nos llevará junto con ustedes a su presencia. ¹⁵ Todo esto es por el bien de ustedes, para que la gracia que está alcanzando a más y más personas haga abundar la acción de gracias para la gloria de Dios.

¹⁶ Por tanto, no nos desanimamos. Al contrario, aunque por fuera nos vamos desgastando, por dentro nos vamos renovando día tras día. ¹⁷ Pues los sufrimientos ligeros y efímeros que ahora padecemos producen una gloria eterna que vale muchísimo más que todo sufrimiento. ¹⁸ Así que no nos fijamos en lo visible, sino en lo invisible, ya que lo que se ve es pasajero, mientras que lo que no se ve es eterno.

5 De hecho, sabemos que, si esta tienda de campaña en que vivimos se deshace, tenemos de Dios un edificio, una casa eterna en el cielo, no construida por manos humanas.

[Jesus went home;] ²⁰and the crowd came together again, so that [Jesus and the disciples] could not even eat. ²¹When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” ²²And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” ²³And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? ²⁴If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. ²⁵And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. ²⁶And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. ²⁷But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.
  ²⁸“Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; ²⁹but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—³⁰for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
  ³¹Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. ³²A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” ³³And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” ³⁴And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! ³⁵Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

²⁰ Luego entró en una casa, y de nuevo se aglomeró tanta gente que ni siquiera podían comer él y sus discípulos. ²¹ Cuando se enteraron sus parientes, salieron a hacerse cargo de él, porque decían: «Está fuera de sí».

³⁰ Es que ellos habían dicho: «Tiene un espíritu maligno».

³¹ En eso llegaron la madre y los hermanos de Jesús. Se quedaron afuera y enviaron a alguien a llamarlo, ³² pues había mucha gente sentada alrededor de él.

—Mira, tu madre y tus hermanos están afuera y te buscan —le dijeron.

³³ —¿Quiénes son mi madre y mis hermanos? —replicó Jesús.

³⁴ Luego echó una mirada a los que estaban sentados alrededor de él y añadió:

—Aquí tienen a mi madre y a mis hermanos. ³⁵ Cualquiera que hace la voluntad de Dios es mi hermano, mi hermana y mi madre.

¹In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. ²Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. ³And one called to another and said:
 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
 the whole earth is full of his glory.”
⁴The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. ⁵And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
  ⁶Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. ⁷The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” ⁸Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

 El año de la muerte del rey Uzías, vi al Señor excelso y sublime, sentado en un trono; las orlas de su manto llenaban el templo. ² Por encima de él había serafines, cada uno de los cuales tenía seis alas: con dos de ellas se cubrían el rostro, con dos se cubrían los pies, y con dos volaban. ³ Y se decían el uno al otro:

«Santo, santo, santo es el Señor Todopoderoso;
    toda la tierra está llena de su gloria».

⁴ Al sonido de sus voces, se estremecieron los umbrales de las puertas y el templo se llenó de humo. ⁵ Entonces grité: «¡Ay de mí, que estoy perdido! Soy un hombre de labios impuros y vivo en medio de un pueblo de labios blasfemos, ¡y no obstante mis ojos han visto al Rey, al Señor Todopoderoso!»

⁶ En ese momento voló hacia mí uno de los serafines. Traía en la mano una brasa que, con unas tenazas, había tomado del altar. ⁷ Con ella me tocó los labios y me dijo:

«Mira, esto ha tocado tus labios;
    tu maldad ha sido borrada,
    y tu pecado, perdonado».

⁸ Entonces oí la voz del Señor que decía:

—¿A quién enviaré? ¿Quién irá por nosotros?

Y respondí:

—Aquí estoy. ¡Envíame a mí!

  worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

  the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. 
 ⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees;
  the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
 ⁶the Lord makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
  and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

  bursts forth in lightning flashes.
 ⁸The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
  the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 
 ⁹The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare.
  And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, “Glory!”
 ¹⁰The Lord sits enthroned above the flood;
  the Lord sits enthroned as king forevermore.
 ¹¹O Lord, give strength to your people;
  give them, O Lord, the blessings of peace.

¹²Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—¹³for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. ¹⁴For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. ¹⁵For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” ¹⁶it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ¹⁷and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

¹Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. ²He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” ³Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” ⁴Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” ⁵Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. ⁶What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ ⁸The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” ⁹Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?
  ¹¹“Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. ¹²If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? ¹³No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. ¹⁴And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, ¹⁵that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
  ¹⁶“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
  ¹⁷“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

 Había entre los fariseos un dirigente de los judíos llamado Nicodemo. ² Este fue de noche a visitar a Jesús.

—Rabí —le dijo—, sabemos que eres un maestro que ha venido de parte de Dios, porque nadie podría hacer las señales que tú haces si Dios no estuviera con él.

³ —De veras te aseguro que quien no nazca de nuevo no puede ver el reino de Dios —dijo Jesús.

⁴ —¿Cómo puede uno nacer de nuevo siendo ya viejo? —preguntó Nicodemo—. ¿Acaso puede entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre y volver a nacer?

⁵ —Yo te aseguro que quien no nazca de agua y del Espíritu no puede entrar en el reino de Dios —respondió Jesús—. ⁶ Lo que nace del cuerpo es cuerpo; lo que nace del Espíritu es espíritu. ⁷ No te sorprendas de que te haya dicho: “Tienen que nacer de nuevo”. ⁸ El viento sopla por donde quiere, y lo oyes silbar, aunque ignoras de dónde viene y a dónde va. Lo mismo pasa con todo el que nace del Espíritu.

⁹ Nicodemo replicó:

—¿Cómo es posible que esto suceda?

¹⁰ —Tú eres maestro de Israel, ¿y no entiendes estas cosas? —respondió Jesús—. ¹¹ Te aseguro que hablamos de lo que sabemos y damos testimonio de lo que hemos visto personalmente, pero ustedes no aceptan nuestro testimonio. ¹² Si les he hablado de las cosas terrenales, y no creen, ¿entonces cómo van a creer si les hablo de las celestiales? ¹³ Nadie ha subido jamás al cielo sino el que descendió del cielo, el Hijo del hombre.

¹⁴ »Como levantó Moisés la serpiente en el desierto, así también tiene que ser levantado el Hijo del hombre, ¹⁵ para que todo el que crea en él tenga vida eterna.

¹⁶ »Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo el que cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna. ¹⁷ Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él.

¹When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. ²And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. ³Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. ⁴All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
  ⁵Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. ⁶And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. ⁷Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? ⁸And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? ⁹Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ¹¹Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” ¹²All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” ¹³But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”
  ¹⁴But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. ¹⁵Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. ¹⁶No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
 ¹⁷‘In the last days it will be, God declares,
 that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
  and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
 and your young men shall see visions,
  and your old men shall dream dreams.
 ¹⁸Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
  in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
   and they shall prophesy.
 ¹⁹And I will show portents in the heaven above
  and signs on the earth below,
   blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
 ²⁰The sun shall be turned to darkness
  and the moon to blood,
   before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
 ²¹Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”

Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos juntos en el mismo lugar. ² De repente, vino del cielo un ruido como el de una violenta ráfaga de viento y llenó toda la casa donde estaban reunidos. ³ Se les aparecieron entonces unas lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. ⁴ Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en diferentes lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía expresarse.

¹² Desconcertados y perplejos, se preguntaban: «¿Qué quiere decir esto?» ¹³ Otros se burlaban y decían: «Lo que pasa es que están borrachos».

¹⁴ Entonces Pedro, con los once, se puso de pie y dijo a voz en cuello: «Compatriotas judíos y todos ustedes que están en Jerusalén, déjenme explicarles lo que sucede; presten atención a lo que les voy a decir. ¹⁵ Estos no están borrachos, como suponen ustedes. ¡Apenas son las nueve de la mañana! ¹⁶ En realidad lo que pasa es lo que anunció el profeta Joel:

¹⁷ »“Sucederá que en los últimos días —dice Dios—,
    derramaré mi Espíritu sobre todo el género humano.
Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán,
    tendrán visiones los jóvenes
    y sueños los ancianos.

  In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full | of your creatures.
 ²⁵Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too many to number,
  living things both small and great.
 ²⁶There go the ships to and fro,
  and Leviathan, which you made for the sport of it.

  to give them their food in due season.

²⁴ ¡Oh Señor, cuán numerosas son tus obras!
    ¡Todas ellas las hiciste con sabiduría!

    que abunda en animales, grandes y pequeños,
    cuyo número es imposible conocer.

³⁰ Pero, si envías tu Espíritu, son creados,
    y así renuevas la faz de la tierra.

³¹ Que la gloria del Señor perdure eternamente;
    que el Señor se regocije en sus obras.
³² Él mira la tierra y la hace temblar;
    toca los montes y los hace echar humo.

³³ Cantaré al Señor toda mi vida;
    cantaré salmos a mi Dios mientras tenga aliento.
³⁴ Quiera él agradarse de mi meditación;
    yo, por mi parte, me alegro en el Señor.

²²We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; ²³and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. ²⁴For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? ²⁵But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
  ²⁶Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. ²⁷And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

²² Sabemos que toda la creación todavía gime a una, como si tuviera dolores de parto. ²³ Y no solo ella, sino también nosotros mismos, que tenemos las primicias del Espíritu, gemimos interiormente, mientras aguardamos nuestra adopción como hijos, es decir, la redención de nuestro cuerpo. ²⁴ Porque en esa esperanza fuimos salvados. Pero la esperanza que se ve ya no es esperanza. ¿Quién espera lo que ya tiene? ²⁵ Pero, si esperamos lo que todavía no tenemos, en la espera mostramos nuestra constancia.

²⁶ Así mismo, en nuestra debilidad el Espíritu acude a ayudarnos. No sabemos qué pedir, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos que no pueden expresarse con palabras. ²⁷ Y Dios, que examina los corazones, sabe cuál es la intención del Espíritu, porque el Espíritu intercede por los creyentes conforme a la voluntad de Dios.

[Jesus said,] ²⁶“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. ²⁷You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.
 ^16:4b“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. ⁵But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ ⁶But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. ⁷Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. ⁸And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹about sin, because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; ¹¹about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
  ¹²“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. ¹³When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. ¹⁴He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

²⁶ »Cuando venga el Consolador, que yo les enviaré de parte del Padre, el Espíritu de verdad que procede del Padre, él testificará acerca de mí. ²⁷ Y también ustedes darán testimonio porque han estado conmigo desde el principio.

⁵ »Ahora vuelvo al que me envió, pero ninguno de ustedes me pregunta: “¿A dónde vas?” ⁶ Al contrario, como les he dicho estas cosas, se han entristecido mucho. ⁷ Pero les digo la verdad: Les conviene que me vaya porque, si no lo hago, el Consolador no vendrá a ustedes; en cambio, si me voy, se lo enviaré a ustedes. ⁸ Y, cuando él venga, convencerá al mundo de su error en cuanto al pecado, a la justicia y al juicio; ⁹ en cuanto al pecado, porque no creen en mí; ¹⁰ en cuanto a la justicia, porque voy al Padre y ustedes ya no podrán verme; ¹¹ y en cuanto al juicio, porque el príncipe de este mundo ya ha sido juzgado.

¹² »Muchas cosas me quedan aún por decirles, que por ahora no podrían soportar. ¹³ Pero, cuando venga el Espíritu de la verdad, él los guiará a toda la verdad, porque no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que dirá solo lo que oiga y les anunciará las cosas por venir. ¹⁴ Él me glorificará porque tomará de lo mío y se lo dará a conocer a ustedes. ¹⁵ Todo cuanto tiene el Padre es mío. Por eso les dije que el Espíritu tomará de lo mío y se lo dará a conocer a ustedes.

¹⁵In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, ¹⁶“Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus—¹⁷for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” ²¹So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ²²beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” ²³So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. ²⁴Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen ²⁵to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” ²⁶And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

¹⁵ Por aquellos días Pedro se puso de pie en medio de los creyentes, que eran un grupo como de ciento veinte personas, ¹⁶ y les dijo: «Hermanos, tenía que cumplirse la Escritura que, por boca de David, había predicho el Espíritu Santo en cuanto a Judas, el que sirvió de guía a los que arrestaron a Jesús. ¹⁷ Judas se contaba entre los nuestros y participaba en nuestro ministerio.

^21-22 Por tanto, es preciso que se una a nosotros un testigo de la resurrección, uno de los que nos acompañaban todo el tiempo que el Señor Jesús vivió entre nosotros, desde que Juan bautizaba hasta el día en que Jesús fue llevado de entre nosotros».

²³ Así que propusieron a dos: a José, llamado Barsabás, apodado el Justo, y a Matías. ²⁴ Y oraron así: «Señor, tú que conoces el corazón de todos, muéstranos a cuál de estos dos has elegido ²⁵ para que se haga cargo del servicio apostólico que Judas dejó para irse al lugar que le correspondía». ²⁶ Luego echaron suertes y la elección recayó en Matías; así que él fue reconocido junto con los once apóstoles.

 ¹Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel | of the wicked,
  nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful!
 ²Their delight is in the law of the Lord,
  and they meditate on God’s teaching day and night. 
 ³They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither;
  everything they do shall prosper.
 ⁴It is not so with the wicked;
  they are like chaff which the wind blows away.
 ⁵Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes,
  nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.
 ⁶For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
  but the way of the wicked shall be destroyed.

Dichoso el hombre
    que no sigue el consejo de los malvados,
    ni se detiene en la senda de los pecadores
    ni cultiva la amistad de los blasfemos,
² sino que en la ley del Señor se deleita,
    y día y noche medita en ella.
³ Es como el árbol
    plantado a la orilla de un río
que, cuando llega su tiempo, da fruto
    y sus hojas jamás se marchitan.
    ¡Todo cuanto hace prospera!

⁴ En cambio, los malvados
    son como paja arrastrada por el viento.
⁵ Por eso no se sostendrán los malvados en el juicio,
    ni los pecadores en la asamblea de los justos.

⁶ Porque el Señor cuida el camino de los justos,
    mas la senda de los malos lleva a la perdición.

⁹If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. ¹⁰Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. ¹¹And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. ¹²Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

¹³I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

⁹ Aceptamos el testimonio humano, pero el testimonio de Dios vale mucho más, precisamente porque es el testimonio de Dios, que él ha dado acerca de su Hijo. ¹⁰ El que cree en el Hijo de Dios acepta este testimonio. El que no cree a Dios lo hace pasar por mentiroso, por no haber creído el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo. ¹¹ Y el testimonio es este: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna, y esa vida está en su Hijo. ¹² El que tiene al Hijo, tiene la vida; el que no tiene al Hijo de Dios, no tiene la vida.

¹³ Les escribo estas cosas a ustedes que creen en el nombre del Hijo de Dios, para que sepan que tienen vida eterna.

[Jesus prayed:] ⁶“I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. ⁷Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; ⁸for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. ⁹I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. ¹⁰All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. ¹¹And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. ¹²While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. ¹⁴I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. ¹⁵I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. ¹⁶They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. ¹⁷Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. ¹⁸As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. ¹⁹And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.”

⁶ »A los que me diste del mundo les he revelado quién eres. Eran tuyos; tú me los diste y ellos han obedecido tu palabra. ⁷ Ahora saben que todo lo que me has dado viene de ti, ⁸ porque les he entregado las palabras que me diste, y ellos las aceptaron; saben con certeza que salí de ti, y han creído que tú me enviaste. ⁹ Ruego por ellos. No ruego por el mundo, sino por los que me has dado, porque son tuyos. ¹⁰ Todo lo que yo tengo es tuyo, y todo lo que tú tienes es mío; y por medio de ellos he sido glorificado. ¹¹ Ya no voy a estar por más tiempo en el mundo, pero ellos están todavía en el mundo, y yo vuelvo a ti.

»Padre santo, protégelos con el poder de tu nombre, el nombre que me diste, para que sean uno, lo mismo que nosotros. ¹² Mientras estaba con ellos, los protegía y los preservaba mediante el nombre que me diste, y ninguno se perdió sino aquel que nació para perderse, a fin de que se cumpliera la Escritura.

¹³ »Ahora vuelvo a ti, pero digo estas cosas mientras todavía estoy en el mundo, para que tengan mi alegría en plenitud. ¹⁴ Yo les he entregado tu palabra, y el mundo los ha odiado porque no son del mundo, como tampoco yo soy del mundo. ¹⁵ No te pido que los quites del mundo, sino que los protejas del maligno. ¹⁶ Ellos no son del mundo, como tampoco lo soy yo. ¹⁷ Santifícalos en la verdad; tu palabra es la verdad. ¹⁸ Como tú me enviaste al mundo, yo los envío también al mundo. ¹⁹ Y por ellos me santifico a mí mismo, para que también ellos sean santificados en la verdad.

⁴⁴While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. ⁴⁵The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, ⁴⁶for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, ⁴⁷“Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” ⁴⁸So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

⁴⁴ Mientras Pedro estaba todavía hablando, el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre todos los que escuchaban el mensaje. ⁴⁵ Los defensores de la circuncisión que habían llegado con Pedro se quedaron asombrados de que el don del Espíritu Santo se hubiera derramado también sobre los gentiles, ⁴⁶ pues los oían hablar en lenguas y alabar a Dios. Entonces Pedro respondió:

⁴⁷ —¿Acaso puede alguien negar el agua para que sean bautizados estos que han recibido el Espíritu Santo lo mismo que nosotros?

⁴⁸ Y mandó que fueran bautizados en el nombre de Jesucristo. Entonces le pidieron que se quedara con ellos algunos días.

¹Sing a new song to the Lord, who has done marvelous things,
  whose right hand and holy arm have won the victory.
 ²O Lord, you have made known your victory,
  you have revealed your righteousness in the sight of the nations.
 ³You remember your steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel;
  all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
 ⁴Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands;
  lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 
 ⁵Sing to the Lord with the harp,
  with the harp and the voice of song.
 ⁶With trumpets and the sound of the horn
  shout with joy before the king, the Lord.
 ⁷Let the sea roar, and all that fills it,
  the world and those who dwell therein.
 ⁸Let the rivers clap their hands,
  and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, who comes to judge the earth.
 ⁹The Lord will judge the world with righteousness
  and the peoples with equity.

Canten al Señor un cántico nuevo,
    porque ha hecho maravillas.
Su diestra, su santo brazo,
    ha alcanzado la victoria.
² El Señor ha hecho gala de su triunfo;
    ha mostrado su justicia a las naciones.
³ Se ha acordado de su amor y de su fidelidad
    por el pueblo de Israel;
¡todos los confines de la tierra son testigos
    de la salvación de nuestro Dios!

⁴ ¡Aclamen alegres al Señor, habitantes de toda la tierra!
    ¡Prorrumpan en alegres cánticos y salmos!
⁵ ¡Canten salmos al Señor al son del arpa,
    al son del arpa y de coros melodiosos!
⁶ ¡Aclamen alegres al Señor, el Rey,
    al son de clarines y trompetas!

⁷ ¡Brame el mar y todo lo que él contiene;
    el mundo y todos sus habitantes!
⁸ ¡Batan palmas los ríos,
    y canten jubilosos todos los montes!
⁹ Canten delante del Señor,
    que ya viene a juzgar la tierra.
Y juzgará al mundo con justicia,
    a los pueblos con equidad.

¹Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. ²By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. ³For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, ⁴for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. ⁵Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

⁶This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

Todo el que cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios, y todo el que ama al padre ama también a sus hijos. ² Así, cuando amamos a Dios y cumplimos sus mandamientos, sabemos que amamos a los hijos de Dios. ³ En esto consiste el amor a Dios: en que obedezcamos sus mandamientos. Y estos no son difíciles de cumplir, ⁴ porque todo el que ha nacido de Dios vence al mundo. Esta es la victoria que vence al mundo: nuestra fe. ⁵ ¿Quién es el que vence al mundo sino el que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios?

⁶ Este es el que vino mediante agua y sangre, Jesucristo; no solo mediante agua, sino mediante agua y sangre. El Espíritu es quien da testimonio de esto, porque el Espíritu es la verdad.

[Jesus said:] ⁹“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. ¹⁰If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. ¹¹I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
  ¹²“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. ¹³No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. ¹⁴You are my friends if you do what I command you. ¹⁵I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. ¹⁶You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. ¹⁷I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.”

Así como el Padre me ha amado a mí, también yo los he amado a ustedes. Permanezcan en mi amor. ¹⁰ Si obedecen mis mandamientos, permanecerán en mi amor, así como yo he obedecido los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanezco en su amor. ¹¹ Les he dicho esto para que tengan mi alegría y así su alegría sea completa. ¹² Y este es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros, como yo los he amado. ¹³ Nadie tiene amor más grande que el dar la vida por sus amigos. ¹⁴ Ustedes son mis amigos si hacen lo que yo les mando. ¹⁵ Ya no los llamo siervos, porque el siervo no está al tanto de lo que hace su amo; los he llamado amigos, porque todo lo que a mi Padre le oí decir se lo he dado a conocer a ustedes. ¹⁶ No me escogieron ustedes a mí, sino que yo los escogí a ustedes y los comisioné para que vayan y den fruto, un fruto que perdure. Así el Padre les dará todo lo que le pidan en mi nombre. ¹⁷ Este es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros.
