²The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. ³The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
  ⁴Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.”
  ⁹Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’ ” ¹⁰And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. ¹¹The Lord spoke to Moses and said, ¹²“I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”
  ¹³In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. ¹⁴When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. ¹⁵When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.”

² Allí, en el desierto, toda la comunidad murmuró contra Moisés y Aarón:

³ —¡Cómo quisiéramos que el Señor nos hubiera quitado la vida en Egipto! —les decían los israelitas—. Allá nos sentábamos en torno a las ollas de carne y comíamos pan hasta saciarnos. ¡Ustedes nos han traído a este desierto para matar de hambre a toda la comunidad!

⁴ Entonces el Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Voy a hacer que les llueva pan del cielo. El pueblo deberá salir todos los días a recoger su ración diaria. Voy a ponerlos a prueba, para ver si cumplen o no mis instrucciones.

⁹ Luego se dirigió Moisés a Aarón:

—Dile a toda la comunidad israelita que se acerque al Señor, pues los ha oído murmurar contra él.

¹⁰ Mientras Aarón hablaba con toda la comunidad israelita, volvieron la mirada hacia el desierto, y vieron que la gloria del Señor se hacía presente en una nube.

¹¹ El Señor habló con Moisés y le dijo: ¹² «Han llegado a mis oídos las murmuraciones de los israelitas. Diles que antes de que caiga la noche comerán carne, y que mañana por la mañana se hartarán de pan. Así sabrán que yo soy el Señor su Dios».

¹³ Esa misma tarde el campamento se llenó de codornices, y por la mañana una capa de rocío rodeaba el campamento. ¹⁴ Al desaparecer el rocío, sobre el desierto quedaron unos copos muy finos, semejantes a la escarcha que cae sobre la tierra. ¹⁵ Como los israelitas no sabían lo que era, al verlo se preguntaban unos a otros: «¿Y esto qué es?» Moisés les respondió:

—Es el pan que el Señor les da para comer.

²³So God commanded the clouds above
  and opened the doors of heaven,
 ²⁴raining down manna upon them to eat
  and giving them grain from heaven. 
 ²⁵So mortals ate the bread of angels;
  God provided for them food enough.
 ²⁶The Lord caused the east wind to blow in the heavens
  and powerfully led out the south wind,
 ²⁷raining down flesh upon them like dust
  and flying birds like the sand of the seas,
 ²⁸letting them fall in the midst of the camp
  and round about the dwellings.
 ²⁹So the people ate and were well filled,
  for God gave them what they craved

²³ Desde lo alto dio una orden a las nubes,
    y se abrieron las puertas de los cielos.
²⁴ Hizo que les lloviera maná, para que comieran;
    pan del cielo les dio a comer.
²⁵ Todos ellos comieron pan de ángeles;
    Dios les envió comida hasta saciarlos.
²⁶ Desató desde el cielo el viento solano,
    y con su poder levantó el viento del sur.
²⁷ Cual lluvia de polvo, hizo que les lloviera carne;
    ¡nubes de pájaros, como la arena del mar!
²⁸ Los hizo caer en medio de su campamento
    y en los alrededores de sus tiendas.
²⁹ Comieron y se hartaron,
    pues Dios les cumplió su capricho.

¹I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, ²with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, ³making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. ⁴There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, ⁵one Lord, one faith, one baptism, ⁶one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
⁷But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. ⁸Therefore it is said,
 “When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;
  he gave gifts to his people.”
⁹(When it says, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) ¹¹The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, ¹²to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, ¹³until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. ¹⁴We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. ¹⁵But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, ¹⁶from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

Por eso yo, que estoy preso por la causa del Señor, les ruego que vivan de una manera digna del llamamiento que han recibido, ² siempre humildes y amables, pacientes, tolerantes unos con otros en amor. ³ Esfuércense por mantener la unidad del Espíritu mediante el vínculo de la paz. ⁴ Hay un solo cuerpo y un solo Espíritu, así como también fueron llamados a una sola esperanza; ⁵ un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo; ⁶ un solo Dios y Padre de todos, que está sobre todos y por medio de todos y en todos.

⁷ Pero a cada uno de nosotros se nos ha dado gracia en la medida en que Cristo ha repartido los dones. ⁸ Por esto dice:

«Cuando ascendió a lo alto,
    se llevó consigo a los cautivos
    y dio dones a los hombres».

⁹ (¿Qué quiere decir eso de que «ascendió», sino que también descendió a las partes bajas, o sea, a la tierra? ¹⁰ El que descendió es el mismo que ascendió por encima de todos los cielos, para llenarlo todo). ¹¹ Él mismo constituyó a unos, apóstoles; a otros, profetas; a otros, evangelistas; y a otros, pastores y maestros, ¹² a fin de capacitar al pueblo de Dios para la obra de servicio, para edificar el cuerpo de Cristo. ¹³ De este modo, todos llegaremos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a una humanidad perfecta que se conforme a la plena estatura de Cristo.

²⁴When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were [beside the sea,] they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
  ²⁵When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” ²⁶Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. ²⁷Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” ²⁸Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” ²⁹Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” ³⁰So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? ³¹Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” ³²Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” ³⁴They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
  ³⁵Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

²⁴ En cuanto la multitud se dio cuenta de que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y se fueron a Capernaúm a buscar a Jesús.

²⁵ Cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del lago, le preguntaron:

—Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?

²⁶ —Ciertamente les aseguro que ustedes me buscan no porque han visto señales, sino porque comieron pan hasta llenarse. ²⁷ Trabajen, pero no por la comida que es perecedera, sino por la que permanece para vida eterna, la cual les dará el Hijo del hombre. Sobre este ha puesto Dios el Padre su sello de aprobación.

²⁸ —¿Qué tenemos que hacer para realizar las obras que Dios exige? —le preguntaron.

²⁹ —Esta es la obra de Dios: que crean en aquel a quien él envió —les respondió Jesús.

³⁰ —¿Y qué señal harás para que la veamos y te creamos? ¿Qué puedes hacer? —insistieron ellos—. ³¹ Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como está escrito: “Pan del cielo les dio a comer”.

³² —Ciertamente les aseguro que no fue Moisés el que les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo —afirmó Jesús—. El que da el verdadero pan del cielo es mi Padre. ³³ El pan de Dios es el que baja del cielo y da vida al mundo.

³⁴ —Señor —le pidieron—, danos siempre ese pan.

³⁵ —Yo soy el pan de vida —declaró Jesús—. El que a mí viene nunca pasará hambre, y el que en mí cree nunca más volverá a tener sed.

⁴²A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to [Elisha,] the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, “Give it to the people and let them eat.” ⁴³But his servant said, “How can I set this before a hundred people?” So he repeated, “Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat and have some left.’ ” ⁴⁴He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the Lord.

⁴² De Baal Salisá llegó alguien que le llevaba al hombre de Dios pan de los primeros frutos: veinte panes de cebada y espigas de trigo fresco. Eliseo le dijo a su criado:

—Dale de comer a la gente.

⁴³ —¿Cómo voy a alimentar a cien personas con esto? —replicó el criado.

Pero Eliseo insistió:

—Dale de comer a la gente, pues así dice el Señor: “Comerán y habrá de sobra”.

⁴⁴ Entonces el criado les sirvió el pan y, conforme a la palabra del Señor, la gente comió y hubo de sobra.

¹⁰All your works shall praise you, O Lord,
  and your faithful ones shall bless you.
 ¹¹They shall tell of the glory of your kingdom
  and speak of your power,
 ¹²that all people may know of your power
  and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
 ¹³Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; your dominion endures throughout all ages.
  You, Lord, are faithful in all your words, and loving in all your works. 
 ¹⁴The Lord upholds all those who fall
  and lifts up those who are bowed down.
 ¹⁵The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord,
  and you give them their food in due season.
 ¹⁶You open wide your hand
  and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
 ¹⁷You are righteous in all your ways
  and loving in all your works.
 ¹⁸You are near to all who call upon you,
  to all who call upon you faithfully. 

¹⁰ Que te alaben, Señor, todas tus obras;

¹⁴For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, ¹⁵from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. ¹⁶I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, ¹⁷and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. ¹⁸I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, ¹⁹and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
  ²⁰Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, ²¹to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

¹⁴ Por esta razón me arrodillo delante del Padre, ¹⁵ de quien recibe nombre toda familia en el cielo y en la tierra. ¹⁶ Le pido que, por medio del Espíritu y con el poder que procede de sus gloriosas riquezas, los fortalezca a ustedes en lo íntimo de su ser, ¹⁷ para que por fe Cristo habite en sus corazones. Y pido que, arraigados y cimentados en amor, ¹⁸ puedan comprender, junto con todos los santos, cuán ancho y largo, alto y profundo es el amor de Cristo; ¹⁹ en fin, que conozcan ese amor que sobrepasa nuestro conocimiento, para que sean llenos de la plenitud de Dios.

²⁰ Al que puede hacer muchísimo más que todo lo que podamos imaginarnos o pedir, por el poder que obra eficazmente en nosotros, ²¹ ¡a él sea la gloria en la iglesia y en Cristo Jesús por todas las generaciones, por los siglos de los siglos! Amén.

¹Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. ²A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. ³Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. ⁴Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. ⁵When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” ⁶He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. ⁷Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” ⁸One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, ⁹“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” ¹⁰Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. ¹¹Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. ¹²When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” ¹³So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. ¹⁴When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.”
¹⁵When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

¹⁶When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, ¹⁷got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. ¹⁸The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. ¹⁹When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. ²⁰But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” ²¹Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

Algún tiempo después, Jesús se fue a la otra orilla del mar de Galilea (o de Tiberíades). ² Y mucha gente lo seguía, porque veían las señales milagrosas que hacía en los enfermos. ³ Entonces subió Jesús a una colina y se sentó con sus discípulos. ⁴ Faltaba muy poco tiempo para la fiesta judía de la Pascua.

⁵ Cuando Jesús alzó la vista y vio una gran multitud que venía hacia él, le dijo a Felipe:

—¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para que coma esta gente?

⁶ Esto lo dijo solo para ponerlo a prueba, porque él ya sabía lo que iba a hacer.

⁷ —Ni con el salario de ocho meses podríamos comprar suficiente pan para darle un pedazo a cada uno —respondió Felipe.

⁸ Otro de sus discípulos, Andrés, que era hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:

⁹ —Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados, pero ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?

¹⁰ —Hagan que se sienten todos —ordenó Jesús.

En ese lugar había mucha hierba. Así que se sentaron, y los varones adultos eran como cinco mil. ¹¹ Jesús tomó entonces los panes, dio gracias y distribuyó a los que estaban sentados todo lo que quisieron. Lo mismo hizo con los pescados.

¹² Una vez que quedaron satisfechos, dijo a sus discípulos:

—Recojan los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se desperdicie nada.

¹³ Así lo hicieron y, con los pedazos de los cinco panes de cebada que les sobraron a los que habían comido, llenaron doce canastas.

¹⁴ Al ver la señal que Jesús había realizado, la gente comenzó a decir: «En verdad este es el profeta, el que ha de venir al mundo». ¹⁵ Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza y declararlo rey, se retiró de nuevo a la montaña él solo.

¹⁶ Cuando ya anochecía, sus discípulos bajaron al lago ¹⁷ y subieron a una barca, y comenzaron a cruzar el lago en dirección a Capernaúm. Para entonces ya había oscurecido, y Jesús todavía no se les había unido. ¹⁸ Por causa del fuerte viento que soplaba, el lago estaba picado. ¹⁹ Habrían remado unos cinco o seis kilómetros cuando vieron que Jesús se acercaba a la barca, caminando sobre el agua, y se asustaron. ²⁰ Pero él les dijo: «No tengan miedo, que soy yo». ²¹ Así que se dispusieron a recibirlo a bordo, y en seguida la barca llegó a la orilla adonde se dirigían.

¹Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. ²Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. ³Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. ⁴I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord.

⁵The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

«¡Ay de los pastores que destruyen y dispersan el rebaño de mis praderas!», afirma el Señor. ² Por eso, así dice el Señor, el Dios de Israel, a los pastores que apacientan a mi pueblo: «Ustedes han dispersado a mis ovejas; las han expulsado y no se han encargado de ellas. Pues bien, yo me encargaré de castigarlos a ustedes por sus malas acciones —afirma el Señor—. ³ Al resto de mis ovejas yo mismo las reuniré de todos los países adonde las expulsé; y las haré volver a sus pastos, donde crecerán y se multiplicarán. ⁴ Pondré sobre ellas pastores que las pastorearán, y ya no temerán ni se espantarán, ni faltará ninguna de ellas —afirma el Señor—.

⁵ »Vienen días —afirma el Señor—,
    en que de la simiente de David
    haré surgir un vástago justo;
él reinará con sabiduría en el país,
    y practicará el derecho y la justicia.
⁶ En esos días Judá será salvada,
    Israel morará seguro.
Y este es el nombre que se le dará:
    “El Señor es nuestra salvación”.

¹The Lord is my shepherd;
  I shall not be in want.
 ²The Lord makes me lie down in green pastures
  and leads me beside still waters.
 ³You restore my soul, O Lord,
  and guide me along right pathways for your name’s sake.
 ⁴Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil;
  for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 
 ⁵You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
  you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is running over.
 ⁶Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

¹¹Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision”—a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands—¹²remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. ¹³But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. ¹⁴For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. ¹⁵He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, ¹⁶and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. ¹⁷So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; ¹⁸for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. ¹⁹So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, ²⁰built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. ²¹In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; ²²in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

³⁰The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. ³¹He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. ³²And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. ³³Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. ³⁴As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

⁵³When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. ⁵⁴When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, ⁵⁵and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. ⁵⁶And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

³⁰ Los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron lo que habían hecho y enseñado.

³¹ Y, como no tenían tiempo ni para comer, pues era tanta la gente que iba y venía, Jesús les dijo:

—Vengan conmigo ustedes solos a un lugar tranquilo y descansen un poco.

³² Así que se fueron solos en la barca a un lugar solitario. ³³ Pero muchos que los vieron salir los reconocieron y, desde todos los poblados, corrieron por tierra hasta allá y llegaron antes que ellos. ³⁴ Cuando Jesús desembarcó y vio tanta gente, tuvo compasión de ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin pastor. Así que comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas.

⁵³ Después de cruzar el lago, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret y atracaron allí. ⁵⁴ Al bajar ellos de la barca, la gente en seguida reconoció a Jesús. ⁵⁵ Lo siguieron por toda aquella región y, adonde oían que él estaba, le llevaban en camillas a los que tenían enfermedades. ⁵⁶ Y dondequiera que iba, en pueblos, ciudades o caseríos, colocaban a los enfermos en las plazas. Le suplicaban que les permitiera tocar siquiera el borde de su manto, y quienes lo tocaban quedaban sanos.

⁷This is what [the Lord God] showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. ⁸And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,
 “See, I am setting a plumb line
  in the midst of my people Israel;
  I will never again pass them by;
 ⁹the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,
  and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,
  and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”
  ¹⁰Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. ¹¹For thus Amos has said,
 ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
  and Israel must go into exile
  away from his land.’ ”
¹²And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; ¹³but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”
  ¹⁴Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, ¹⁵and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ ”

⁷ El Señor me mostró otra visión: Estaba él de pie junto a un muro construido a plomo, y tenía una cuerda de plomada en la mano. ⁸ Y el Señor me preguntó:

—¿Qué ves, Amós?

—Una cuerda de plomada —respondí.

Entonces el Señor dijo:

—Mira, voy a tirar la plomada en medio de mi pueblo Israel; no volveré a perdonarlo.

⁹ »Los altares paganos de Isaac serán destruidos,
    y arruinados los santuarios de Israel;
me levantaré con espada
    contra el palacio de Jeroboán».

¹⁰ Entonces Amasías, sacerdote de Betel, envió un mensaje a Jeroboán rey de Israel: «Amós está conspirando contra ti en medio de Israel. El país ya no aguanta tanta palabrería de Amós, ¹¹ porque anda diciendo:

»“Jeroboán morirá a espada,
    e Israel será llevado cautivo
    lejos de su tierra”».

¹² Entonces Amasías le dijo a Amós:

—¡Largo de aquí, vidente! ¡Si quieres ganarte el pan profetizando, vete a la tierra de Judá! ¹³ No vuelvas a profetizar en Betel, porque este es el santuario del rey; es el templo del reino.

¹⁴ Amós le respondió a Amasías:

—Yo no soy profeta ni hijo de profeta, sino que cuido ovejas y cultivo higueras. ¹⁵ Pero el Señor me sacó de detrás del rebaño y me dijo: “Ve y profetiza a mi pueblo Israel”.

⁸I will listen to what the Lord God is saying;
  for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you.
 ⁹Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you,
  that your glory may dwell in our land. 
 ¹⁰Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together;
  righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
 ¹¹Faithfulness shall spring up from the earth,
  and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
 ¹²The Lord will indeed grant prosperity,
  and our land will yield its increase.
 ¹³Righteousness shall go before the Lord
  and shall prepare for God a pathway. 

⁸ Voy a escuchar lo que Dios el Señor dice:
    él promete paz a su pueblo y a sus fieles,
    siempre y cuando no se vuelvan a la necedad.
⁹ Muy cercano está para salvar a los que le temen,
    para establecer su gloria en nuestra tierra.

¹⁰ El amor y la verdad se encontrarán;
    se besarán la paz y la justicia.
¹¹ De la tierra brotará la verdad,
    y desde el cielo se asomará la justicia.
¹² El Señor mismo nos dará bienestar,
    y nuestra tierra rendirá su fruto.
¹³ La justicia será su heraldo
    y le preparará el camino.

³Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, ⁴just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. ⁵He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, ⁶to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. ⁷In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace ⁸that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight ⁹he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, ¹⁰as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. ¹¹In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, ¹²so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. ¹³In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; ¹⁴this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

³ Alabado sea Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que nos ha bendecido en las regiones celestiales con toda bendición espiritual en Cristo. ⁴ Dios nos escogió en él antes de la creación del mundo, para que seamos santos y sin mancha delante de él. En amor ⁵ nos predestinó para ser adoptados como hijos suyos por medio de Jesucristo, según el buen propósito de su voluntad, ⁶ para alabanza de su gloriosa gracia, que nos concedió en su Amado. ⁷ En él tenemos la redención mediante su sangre, el perdón de nuestros pecados, conforme a las riquezas de la gracia ⁸ que Dios nos dio en abundancia con toda sabiduría y entendimiento. ⁹ Él nos hizo conocer el misterio de su voluntad conforme al buen propósito que de antemano estableció en Cristo, ¹⁰ para llevarlo a cabo cuando se cumpliera el tiempo, esto es, reunir en él todas las cosas, tanto las del cielo como las de la tierra.

¹¹ En Cristo también fuimos hechos herederos, pues fuimos predestinados según el plan de aquel que hace todas las cosas conforme al designio de su voluntad, ¹² a fin de que nosotros, que ya hemos puesto nuestra esperanza en Cristo, seamos para alabanza de su gloria. ¹³ En él también ustedes, cuando oyeron el mensaje de la verdad, el evangelio que les trajo la salvación, y lo creyeron, fueron marcados con el sello que es el Espíritu Santo prometido. ¹⁴ Este garantiza nuestra herencia hasta que llegue la redención final del pueblo adquirido por Dios, para alabanza de su gloria.

¹⁴King Herod heard of [the disciples’ preaching,] for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.” ¹⁵But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” ¹⁶But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”
  ¹⁷For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. ¹⁸For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ¹⁹And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, ²⁰for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. ²¹But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. ²²When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” ²³And he solemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” ²⁴She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.” ²⁵Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” ²⁶The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. ²⁷Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

¹⁴ El rey Herodes se enteró de esto, pues el nombre de Jesús se había hecho famoso. Algunos decían: «Juan el Bautista ha resucitado, y por eso tiene poder para realizar milagros». ¹⁵ Otros decían: «Es Elías». Otros, en fin, afirmaban: «Es un profeta, como los de antes». ¹⁶ Pero, cuando Herodes oyó esto, exclamó: «¡Juan, al que yo mandé que le cortaran la cabeza, ha resucitado!»

¹⁷ En efecto, Herodes mismo había mandado que arrestaran a Juan y que lo encadenaran en la cárcel. Herodes se había casado con Herodías, esposa de Felipe su hermano, ¹⁸ y Juan le había estado diciendo a Herodes: «La ley te prohíbe tener a la esposa de tu hermano». ¹⁹ Por eso Herodías le guardaba rencor a Juan y deseaba matarlo. Pero no había logrado hacerlo, ²⁰ ya que Herodes temía a Juan y lo protegía, pues sabía que era un hombre justo y santo. Cuando Herodes oía a Juan, se quedaba muy desconcertado, pero lo escuchaba con gusto.

²¹ Por fin se presentó la oportunidad. En su cumpleaños Herodes dio un banquete a sus altos oficiales, a los comandantes militares y a los notables de Galilea. ²² La hija de Herodías entró en el banquete y bailó, y esto agradó a Herodes y a los invitados.

—Pídeme lo que quieras y te lo daré —le dijo el rey a la muchacha.

²³ Y le prometió bajo juramento:

—Te daré cualquier cosa que me pidas, aun cuando sea la mitad de mi reino.

²⁴ Ella salió a preguntarle a su madre:

—¿Qué debo pedir?

—La cabeza de Juan el Bautista —contestó.

²⁵ En seguida se fue corriendo la muchacha a presentarle al rey su petición:

—Quiero que ahora mismo me des en una bandeja la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.

²⁶ El rey se quedó angustiado, pero, a causa de sus juramentos y en atención a los invitados, no quiso desairarla. ²⁷ Así que en seguida envió a un verdugo con la orden de llevarle la cabeza de Juan. El hombre fue, decapitó a Juan en la cárcel ²⁸ y volvió con la cabeza en una bandeja. Se la entregó a la muchacha, y ella se la dio a su madre. ²⁹ Al enterarse de esto, los discípulos de Juan fueron a recoger el cuerpo y le dieron sepultura.
