¹⁸The Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” ¹⁹So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. ²⁰The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. ²¹So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. ²²And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. ²³Then the man said,
 “This at last is bone of my bones
  and flesh of my flesh;
 this one shall be called Woman,
  for out of Man this one was taken.”
²⁴Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

¹⁸ Luego Dios el Señor dijo: «No es bueno que el hombre esté solo. Voy a hacerle una ayuda adecuada». ¹⁹ Entonces Dios el Señor formó de la tierra toda ave del cielo y todo animal del campo, y se los llevó al hombre para ver qué nombre les pondría. El hombre les puso nombre a todos los seres vivos, y con ese nombre se les conoce. ²⁰ Así el hombre fue poniéndoles nombre a todos los animales domésticos, a todas las aves del cielo y a todos los animales del campo. Sin embargo, no se encontró entre ellos la ayuda adecuada para el hombre.

²¹ Entonces Dios el Señor hizo que el hombre cayera en un sueño profundo y, mientras este dormía, le sacó una costilla y le cerró la herida. ²² De la costilla que le había quitado al hombre, Dios el Señor hizo una mujer y se la presentó al hombre, ²³ el cual exclamó:

    porque del hombre fue sacada».

¹O Lord our Lord,
  how majestic is your name in all the earth!
 ²you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children;
  you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger.
 ³When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
  the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
 ⁴what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them,
  human beings that you should care for them? 
 ⁵Yet you have made them little less than divine;
  with glory and honor you crown them.
 ⁶You have made them rule over the works of your hands;
  you have put all things under their feet:
 ⁷all  flocks and cattle,
  even the wild beasts of the field,
 ⁸the birds of the air, the fish of the sea,
  and whatever passes along the paths of the sea.
 ⁹O Lord our Lord,
  how majestic is your name in all the earth!

¹Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, ²but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. ³He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, ⁴having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
 ^2:5Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. ⁶But someone has testified somewhere,
 “What are human beings that you are mindful of them,
  or mortals, that you care for them?
 ⁷You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;
  you have crowned them with glory and honor,
  ⁸subjecting all things under their feet.”
Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them,⁹but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
  ¹⁰It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. ¹¹For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, ¹²saying,
 “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,
  in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

Dios, que muchas veces y de varias maneras habló a nuestros antepasados en otras épocas por medio de los profetas, ² en estos días finales nos ha hablado por medio de su Hijo. A este lo designó heredero de todo, y por medio de él hizo el universo. ³ El Hijo es el resplandor de la gloria de Dios, la fiel imagen de lo que él es, y el que sostiene todas las cosas con su palabra poderosa. Después de llevar a cabo la purificación de los pecados, se sentó a la derecha de la Majestad en las alturas. ⁴ Así llegó a ser superior a los ángeles en la misma medida en que el nombre que ha heredado supera en excelencia al de ellos.

⁵ Dios no puso bajo el dominio de los ángeles el mundo venidero del que estamos hablando. ⁶ Como alguien ha atestiguado en algún lugar:

Si Dios puso bajo él todas las cosas, entonces no hay nada que no le esté sujeto. Ahora bien, es cierto que todavía no vemos que todo le esté sujeto. ⁹ Sin embargo, vemos a Jesús, que fue hecho un poco inferior a los ángeles, coronado de gloria y honra por haber padecido la muerte. Así, por la gracia de Dios, la muerte que él sufrió resulta en beneficio de todos.

²Some Pharisees came, and to test [Jesus] they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” ³He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” ⁴They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” ⁵But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. ⁶But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ⁷‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, ⁸and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
  ¹⁰Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. ¹¹He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; ¹²and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

  ¹³People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. ¹⁴But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. ¹⁵Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” ¹⁶And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

² En eso, unos fariseos se le acercaron y, para ponerlo a prueba, le preguntaron:

—¿Está permitido que un hombre se divorcie de su esposa?

³ —¿Qué les mandó Moisés? —replicó Jesús.

⁴ —Moisés permitió que un hombre le escribiera un certificado de divorcio y la despidiera —contestaron ellos.

⁵ —Esa ley la escribió Moisés para ustedes por lo obstinados que son —aclaró Jesús—. ⁶ Pero al principio de la creación Dios “los hizo hombre y mujer”. ⁷ “Por eso dejará el hombre a su padre y a su madre, y se unirá a su esposa, ⁸ y los dos llegarán a ser un solo cuerpo”. Así que ya no son dos, sino uno solo. ⁹ Por tanto, lo que Dios ha unido, que no lo separe el hombre.

¹⁰ Vueltos a casa, los discípulos le preguntaron a Jesús sobre este asunto.

⁴The rabble among them had a strong craving; and the Israelites also wept again, and said, “If only we had meat to eat! ⁵We remember the fish we used to eat in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; ⁶but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.”
  ¹⁰Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, all at the entrances of their tents. Then the Lord became very angry, and Moses was displeased. ¹¹So Moses said to the Lord, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? ¹²Did I conceive all this people? Did I give birth to them, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a sucking child, to the land that you promised on oath to their ancestors’? ¹³Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they come weeping to me and say, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ ¹⁴I am not able to carry all this people alone, for they are too heavy for me. ¹⁵If this is the way you are going to treat me, put me to death at once—if I have found favor in your sight—and do not let me see my misery.”
  ¹⁶So the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tent of meeting, and have them take their place there with you.”
  ²⁴So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. ²⁵Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again.
  ²⁶Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. ²⁷And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” ²⁸And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, “My lord Moses, stop them!” ²⁹But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord‘s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!”

⁴ Al populacho que iba con ellos le vino un apetito voraz. Y también los israelitas volvieron a llorar, y dijeron: «¡Quién nos diera carne! ⁵ ¡Cómo echamos de menos el pescado que comíamos gratis en Egipto! ¡También comíamos pepinos y melones, y puerros, cebollas y ajos! ⁶ Pero ahora, tenemos reseca la garganta; ¡y no vemos nada que no sea este maná!»

¹⁰ Moisés escuchó que las familias del pueblo lloraban, cada una a la entrada de su tienda, con lo cual hacían que la ira del Señor se encendiera en extremo. Entonces, muy disgustado, ¹¹ Moisés oró al Señor:

—Si yo soy tu siervo, ¿por qué me perjudicas? ¿Por qué me niegas tu favor y me obligas a cargar con todo este pueblo? ¹² ¿Acaso yo lo concebí, o lo di a luz, para que me exijas que lo lleve en mi regazo, como si fuera su nodriza, y lo lleve hasta la tierra que les prometiste a sus antepasados? ¹³ Todo este pueblo viene llorando a pedirme carne. ¿De dónde voy a sacarla? ¹⁴ Yo solo no puedo con todo este pueblo. ¡Es una carga demasiado pesada para mí! ¹⁵ Si este es el trato que vas a darme, ¡me harás un favor si me quitas la vida! ¡Así me veré libre de mi desgracia!

¹⁶ El Señor le respondió a Moisés:

—Tráeme a setenta ancianos de Israel, y asegúrate de que sean ancianos y gobernantes del pueblo. Llévalos a la Tienda de reunión, y haz que esperen allí contigo.

²⁴ Moisés fue y le comunicó al pueblo lo que el Señor le había dicho. Después juntó a setenta ancianos del pueblo, y se quedó esperando con ellos alrededor de la Tienda de reunión. ²⁵ El Señor descendió en la nube y habló con Moisés, y compartió con los setenta ancianos el Espíritu que estaba sobre él. Cuando el Espíritu descansó sobre ellos, se pusieron a profetizar. Pero esto no volvió a repetirse.

²⁶ Dos de los ancianos se habían quedado en el campamento. Uno se llamaba Eldad y el otro Medad. Aunque habían sido elegidos, no acudieron a la Tienda de reunión. Sin embargo, el Espíritu descansó sobre ellos y se pusieron a profetizar dentro del campamento. ²⁷ Entonces un muchacho corrió a contárselo a Moisés:

—¡Eldad y Medad están profetizando dentro del campamento!

²⁸ Josué hijo de Nun, uno de los siervos escogidos de Moisés, exclamó:

—¡Moisés, señor mío, detenlos!

²⁹ Pero Moisés le respondió:

—¿Estás celoso por mí? ¡Cómo quisiera que todo el pueblo del Señor profetizara, y que el Señor pusiera su Espíritu en todos ellos!

⁷The teaching of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul;
  the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the simple.
 ⁸The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart;
  the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes.
 ⁹The fear of the Lord is clean and endures forever;
  the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
 ¹⁰More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold,
  sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. 
 ¹¹By them also is your servant enlightened,
  and in keeping them there is great reward.
 ¹²Who can detect one’s own offenses?
  Cleanse me from my secret faults.
 ¹³Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me;
  then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense.
 ¹⁴Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,
  O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

    oh Señor, roca mía y redentor mío.

¹³Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. ¹⁴Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. ¹⁶Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. ¹⁷Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. ¹⁸Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.
  ¹⁹My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, ²⁰you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner’s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

¹³ ¿Está afligido alguno entre ustedes? Que ore. ¿Está alguno de buen ánimo? Que cante alabanzas. ¹⁴ ¿Está enfermo alguno de ustedes? Haga llamar a los ancianos de la iglesia para que oren por él y lo unjan con aceite en el nombre del Señor. ¹⁵ La oración de fe sanará al enfermo y el Señor lo levantará. ¹⁷ Elías era un hombre con debilidades como las nuestras. Con fervor oró que no lloviera, y no llovió sobre la tierra durante tres años y medio. ¹⁸ Volvió a orar, y el cielo dio su lluvia y la tierra produjo sus frutos.

³⁸John said to [Jesus,] “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” ³⁹But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. ⁴⁰Whoever is not against us is for us. ⁴¹For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.
  ⁴²“If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. ⁴³If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. ⁴⁵And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. ⁴⁷And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, ⁴⁸where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.
  ⁴⁹“For everyone will be salted with fire. ⁵⁰Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

⁴² »Pero, si alguien hace pecar a uno de estos pequeños que creen en mí, más le valdría que le ataran al cuello una piedra de molino y lo arrojaran al mar. ⁴³ Si tu mano te hace pecar, córtatela. Más te vale entrar en la vida manco que ir con las dos manos al infierno, donde el fuego nunca se apaga.⁴⁵ Y, si tu pie te hace pecar, córtatelo. Más te vale entrar en la vida cojo que ser arrojado con los dos pies al infierno.⁴⁷ Y, si tu ojo te hace pecar, sácatelo. Más te vale entrar tuerto en el reino de Dios que ser arrojado con los dos ojos al infierno, ⁴⁸ donde

»“su gusano no muere,
    y el fuego no se apaga”.

⁴⁹ La sal con que todos serán sazonados es el fuego.

⁵⁰ »La sal es buena, pero, si deja de ser salada, ¿cómo le pueden volver a dar sabor? Que no falte la sal entre ustedes, para que puedan vivir en paz unos con otros».

¹⁸It was the Lord who made it known to me, and I knew;
  then you showed me their evil deeds.
 ¹⁹But I was like a gentle lamb
  led to the slaughter.
 And I did not know it was against me
  that they devised schemes, saying,
 “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit,
  let us cut him off from the land of the living,
  so that his name will no longer be remembered!”
 ²⁰But you, O Lord of hosts, who judge righteously,
  who try the heart and the mind,
 let me see your retribution upon them,
  for to you I have committed my cause.

¹Save me, O God, by your name;
  in your might, defend my cause.
 ²Hear my prayer, O God;
  give ear to the words of my mouth.
 ³For strangers have risen up against me, and the ruthless have sought my life,
  those who have no regard for God.
 ⁴Behold, God is my helper;
  it is the Lord who sustains my life. 
 ⁵Render evil to those who spy on me;
  in your faithfulness, destroy them.
 ⁶I will offer you a freewill sacrifice
  and praise your name, O Lord, for it is good.
 ⁷For you have rescued me from every trouble,
  and my eye looks down on my enemies.

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. ¹⁴But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. ¹⁵Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. ¹⁶For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. ¹⁷But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. ¹⁸And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.

^4:1Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? ²You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. ³You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. ⁷Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ^8aDraw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

¹³ ¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre ustedes? Que lo demuestre con su buena conducta, mediante obras hechas con la humildad que le da su sabiduría. ¹⁴ Pero, si ustedes tienen envidias amargas y rivalidades en el corazón, dejen de presumir y de faltar a la verdad. ¹⁵ Esa no es la sabiduría que desciende del cielo, sino que es terrenal, puramente humana y diabólica. ¹⁶ Porque donde hay envidias y rivalidades, también hay confusión y toda clase de acciones malvadas. ¹⁷ En cambio, la sabiduría que desciende del cielo es ante todo pura, y además pacífica, bondadosa, dócil, llena de compasión y de buenos frutos, imparcial y sincera. ¹⁸ En fin, el fruto de la justicia se siembra en paz para los que hacen la paz. 4 ¿De dónde surgen las guerras y los conflictos entre ustedes? ¿No es precisamente de las pasiones que luchan dentro de ustedes mismos? ² Desean algo y no lo consiguen. Matan y sienten envidia, y no pueden obtener lo que quieren. Riñen y se hacen la guerra. No tienen, porque no piden. ³ Y, cuando piden, no reciben porque piden con malas intenciones, para satisfacer sus propias pasiones.⁷ Así que sométanse a Dios. Resistan al diablo, y él huirá de ustedes. ⁸ Acérquense a Dios, y él se acercará a ustedes. ¡Pecadores, límpiense las manos! ¡Ustedes los inconstantes, purifiquen su corazón!

³⁰[Jesus and the disciples went on] and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it;³¹for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.” ³²But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.
  ³³Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” ³⁴But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. ³⁵He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” ³⁶Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, ³⁷“Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

³⁰ Dejaron aquel lugar y pasaron por Galilea. Pero Jesús no quería que nadie lo supiera, ³¹ porque estaba instruyendo a sus discípulos. Les decía: «El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres. Lo matarán, y a los tres días de muerto resucitará».

³² Pero ellos no entendían lo que quería decir con esto, y no se atrevían a preguntárselo.

³³ Llegaron a Capernaúm. Cuando ya estaba en casa, Jesús les preguntó:

—¿Qué venían discutiendo por el camino?

³⁴ Pero ellos se quedaron callados, porque en el camino habían discutido entre sí quién era el más importante.

³⁵ Entonces Jesús se sentó, llamó a los doce y les dijo:

—Si alguno quiere ser el primero, que sea el último de todos y el servidor de todos.

³⁶ Luego tomó a un niño y lo puso en medio de ellos. Abrazándolo, les dijo:

³⁷ —El que recibe en mi nombre a uno de estos niños me recibe a mí; y el que me recibe a mí no me recibe a mí, sino al que me envió.

⁴The Lord God has given me
  the tongue of a teacher,
 that I may know how to sustain
  the weary with a word.
 Morning by morning he wakens—
  wakens my ear
  to listen as those who are taught.
 ⁵The Lord God has opened my ear,
  and I was not rebellious,
  I did not turn backward.
 ⁶I gave my back to those who struck me,
  and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;
 I did not hide my face
  from insult and spitting.

 ⁷The Lord God helps me;
  therefore I have not been disgraced;
 therefore I have set my face like flint,
  and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
  ⁸he who vindicates me is near.
 Who will contend with me?
  Let us stand up together.
 Who are my adversaries?
  Let them confront me.
 ^9aIt is the Lord God who helps me;
  who will declare me guilty?

⁴ El Señor omnipotente me ha concedido
    tener una lengua instruida,
    para sostener con mi palabra al fatigado.
Todas las mañanas me despierta,
    y también me despierta el oído,
    para que escuche como los discípulos.
⁵ El Señor omnipotente me ha abierto los oídos,
    y no he sido rebelde ni me he vuelto atrás.
⁶ Ofrecí mi espalda a los que me golpeaban,
    mis mejillas a los que me arrancaban la barba;
ante las burlas y los escupitajos
    no escondí mi rostro.
⁷ Por cuanto el Señor omnipotente me ayuda,
    no seré humillado.
Por eso endurecí mi rostro como el pedernal,
    y sé que no seré avergonzado.
⁸ Cercano está el que me justifica;
    ¿quién entonces contenderá conmigo?
    ¡Comparezcamos juntos!
¿Quién es mi acusador?
    ¡Que se me enfrente!
⁹ ¡El Señor omnipotente es quien me ayuda!
    ¿Quién me condenará?

¹I love the Lord, who has  heard my voice,
  and listened to my supplication,
 ²for the Lord has given ear to me
  whenever I called.
 ³The cords of death entangled me; the anguish of the grave came upon me;
  I came to grief and sorrow.
 ⁴Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
  “O Lord, I pray you, save my life.” 
 ⁵Gracious is the Lord and righteous;
  our God is full of compassion.
 ⁶The Lord watches over the innocent;
  I was brought low,  and God saved me.
 ⁷Turn again to your rest, O my soul.
  for the Lord has dealt  well with you.
 ⁸For you have rescued my  life from death,
  my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling;
 ⁹I will walk in the presence of the Lord
  in the land of the living.

Yo amo al Señor
    porque él escucha mi voz suplicante.
² Por cuanto él inclina a mí su oído,
    lo invocaré toda mi vida.

³ Los lazos de la muerte me enredaron;
    me sorprendió la angustia del sepulcro,
    y caí en la ansiedad y la aflicción.
⁴ Entonces clamé al Señor:
    «¡Te ruego, Señor, que me salves la vida!»

⁵ El Señor es compasivo y justo;
    nuestro Dios es todo ternura.
⁶ El Señor protege a la gente sencilla;
    estaba yo muy débil, y él me salvó.

⁷ ¡Ya puedes, alma mía, estar tranquila,
    que el Señor ha sido bueno contigo!

⁸ Tú, Señor, me has librado de la muerte,
    has enjugado mis lágrimas,
    no me has dejado tropezar.
⁹ Por eso andaré siempre delante del Señor
    en esta tierra de los vivientes.

¹Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. ²For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. ³If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. ⁴Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. ⁵So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.
  How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! ⁶And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, ⁸but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. ⁹With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. ¹⁰From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. ¹¹Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? ¹²Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

 Hermanos míos, no pretendan muchos de ustedes ser maestros, pues, como saben, seremos juzgados con más severidad. ² Todos fallamos mucho. Si alguien nunca falla en lo que dice, es una persona perfecta, capaz también de controlar todo su cuerpo.

³ Cuando ponemos freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, podemos controlar todo el animal. ⁴ Fíjense también en los barcos. A pesar de ser tan grandes y de ser impulsados por fuertes vientos, se gobiernan por un pequeño timón a voluntad del piloto. ⁵ Así también la lengua es un miembro muy pequeño del cuerpo, pero hace alarde de grandes hazañas. ¡Imagínense qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeña chispa! ⁶ También la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de maldad. Siendo uno de nuestros órganos, contamina todo el cuerpo y, encendida por el infierno, prende a su vez fuego a todo el curso de la vida.

⁷ El ser humano sabe domar y, en efecto, ha domado toda clase de fieras, de aves, de reptiles y de bestias marinas; ⁸ pero nadie puede domar la lengua. Es un mal irrefrenable, lleno de veneno mortal.

⁹ Con la lengua bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a las personas, creadas a imagen de Dios. ¹⁰ De una misma boca salen bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. ¹¹ ¿Puede acaso brotar de una misma fuente agua dulce y agua salada? ¹² Hermanos míos, ¿acaso puede dar aceitunas una higuera o higos una vid? Pues tampoco una fuente de agua salada puede dar agua dulce.

²⁷Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” ²⁸And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” ²⁹He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” ³⁰And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.  ³¹Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. ³²He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. ³³But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” ³⁴He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. ³⁵For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. ³⁶For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? ³⁷Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? ³⁸Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

²⁷ Jesús y sus discípulos salieron hacia las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo. En el camino les preguntó: —¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo? ²⁸ —Unos dicen que Juan el Bautista, otros que Elías, y otros que uno de los profetas —contestaron. ²⁹ —Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo? —Tú eres el Cristo —afirmó Pedro.

³⁰ Jesús les ordenó que no hablaran a nadie acerca de él. ³¹ Luego comenzó a enseñarles: —El Hijo del hombre tiene que sufrir muchas cosas y ser rechazado por los ancianos, por los jefes de los sacerdotes y por los maestros de la ley. Es necesario que lo maten y que a los tres días resucite. ³² Habló de esto con toda claridad. Pedro lo llevó aparte y comenzó a reprenderlo. ³³ Pero Jesús se dio la vuelta, miró a sus discípulos, y reprendió a Pedro. —¡Aléjate de mí, Satanás! —le dijo—. Tú no piensas en las cosas de Dios, sino en las de los hombres. ³⁴ Entonces llamó a la multitud y a sus discípulos. —Si alguien quiere ser mi discípulo —les dijo—, que se niegue a sí mismo, lleve su cruz y me siga. ³⁵ Porque el que quiera salvar su vida la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida por mi causa y por el evangelio la salvará. ³⁶ ¿De qué sirve ganar el mundo entero si se pierde la vida? ³⁷ ¿O qué se puede dar a cambio de la vida? ³⁸ Si alguien se avergüenza de mí y de mis palabras en medio de esta generación adúltera y pecadora, también el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará de él cuando venga en la gloria de su Padre con los santos ángeles.
