St. John’s Past, Present, and Future

John, the Evangelist, was the disciple “whom Jesus loved.”  He was the one male disciple present when Jesus was crucified on the cross.  John, two days later, was ready and quick to believe in Jesus’ resurrection that first Easter morning.  It makes sense that this congregation, bearing the name of the beloved disciple, would stay close to its Lord and Savior and exhibit that similar hope in resurrection and new life.

St. John’s Lutheran Church was officially organized as a congregation on January 27, 1946.  Worship services were held at the Austin Theater on South Congress Avenue.  In 1950, the 400 block of West Live Oak was purchased and the first building was dedicated in July of 1951.  St. John’s relocated to its present site at 409 West Ben White Freeway in 1966.  St. John’s Child Care began service to the community soon after relocation.  Numerous children and families have been blessed by the ministry of St. John’s Child Care for over forty years.

In 1980, St. John’s was able to help form a daughter congregation, Abiding Love Lutheran Church, as an extension of Lutheran ministry in South Austin.

In 1985, a Lutheran Spanish-worshipping mission began its relationship with St. John’s.  The mission, offering Sunday worship in the sanctuary, officially became a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in October of 1991.  Carrying the name of  “San Lucas” (St. Luke’s), the physician evangelist who was a gentile convert to Christianity, the congregation effectively welcomed and received Hispanics to Lutherans fellowship and understanding.

In August of 1999, members of San Lucas became new members of St. John’s (San Juan).  San Lucas was dissolved as a congregation, and following in the Christian cycle of death and resurrection, St. John’s was reborn as “one congregation worshipping in two languages”.

St. John’s/San Juan has more than sixty years of ministry in Jesus’ name.  May this congregation’s present and future reflect its heritage of staying close to the Lord and welcoming those newly in its midst.

San Juan en el Pasado, Presente, y Futuro

Juan, el evangelista, fue el discipulo “a quien Jesus queria mucho.”  Juan fue el unico discipulo valiente que se quedo mientras lo crucificaron a Jesus.  Juan, dos dias despues, estaba listo y pronto para creer en la resurreccion de Jesus esa primera manana de Pascua.  Es propicio que esta congregacion, llevando el nombre del querido discipulo, se quedara cerca de su Senor y Salvador y mostrara la misma esperanza en resurreccion y vida nueva.

“St. John’s” fue organizada oficialmente como una iglesia en el dia 27 de Enero, 1946.  Hubo servicios de adoracion en “Austin Theater” localizado en la avenida de South Congress.    En 1950, el bloque 400 de la calle West Live Oak fue comprado y el primer edificio fue dedicado en Julio de 1951.  St. John’s se mudo a su localidad presente de 409 W. Ben White Freeway en 1966.  El ministerio de St. John’s Child Care a la comunidad comenzo en la nueva loacalidad; muchos ninos y familias han sido bendecidos por este ministerio mas de cuarenta anos.

En 1980, St. John’s dio a luz a una congregacion hija, Abiding Love Lutheran Church, como una extension del ministerio luterano en South Austin.

En 1985, una mision de habla hispana empezo una relacion con St. John’s.  La mision, ofreciendo un servicio de adoracion en el santuario cada domingo, se realizo oficialmente como una congregacion de La Iglesia Luterana Evangelica en America (ILEA) en Octubre de 1991.  Llevando el nombre de “San Lucas” el medico evangelista quien se convirtio al cristianismo, la congregacion eficazmente daba la bienvenida y los reciba a Latinos a la confraternidad y entendimiento luterano.

En Agosto de 1999, miembros de San Lucas se hicieron miembros de St. John’s, o sea San Juan.  San Lucas se disolvio como una congregacion, pero siguiendo el ciclo cristiano de muerte y resurreccion, St. John’s fue renacido como “una congregacion adorando a Dios en dos idiomas”.

St. John’s/San Juan tiene mas sesenta anos de ministerio en el nombre de Jesus.  Que el presente y el futuro de esta congregacion reneje su herencia de quedarse cerca al Senor y dar la bienvenida a los nuevos que vienen en medio de nosotros.
