¹The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind:
²“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
³Gird up your loins like a man,
  I will question you, and you shall declare to me.

⁴“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
  Tell me, if you have understanding.
⁵Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
  Or who stretched the line upon it?
⁶On what were its bases sunk,
  or who laid its cornerstone
⁷when the morning stars sang together
  and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?

⁸“Or who shut in the sea with doors
  when it burst out from the womb?—
⁹when I made the clouds its garment,
  and thick darkness its swaddling band,
¹⁰and prescribed bounds for it,
  and set bars and doors,
¹¹and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
  and here shall your proud waves be stopped’?”

El Señor le respondió a Job desde la tempestad. Le dijo:

² «¿Quién es este, que oscurece mi consejo
    con palabras carentes de sentido?
³ Prepárate a hacerme frente;
    yo voy a interrogarte, y tú me responderás.

⁴ »¿Dónde estabas cuando puse las bases de la tierra?
    ¡Dímelo, si de veras sabes tanto!
⁵ ¡Seguramente sabes quién estableció sus dimensiones
    y quién tendió sobre ella la cinta de medir!
⁶ ¿Sobre qué están puestos sus cimientos,
    o quién puso su piedra angular
⁷ mientras cantaban a coro las estrellas matutinas
    y todos los ángeles gritaban de alegría?

⁸ »¿Quién encerró el mar tras sus compuertas
    cuando este brotó del vientre de la tierra?
⁹ ¿O cuando lo arropé con las nubes
    y lo envolví en densas tinieblas?
¹⁰ ¿O cuando establecí sus límites
    y en sus compuertas coloqué cerrojos?
¹¹ ¿O cuando le dije: “Solo hasta aquí puedes llegar;
    de aquí no pasarán tus orgullosas olas”?

¹Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good,
  for God’s mercy endures forever.
 ²Let the redeemed of the Lord proclaim
  that God redeemed them from the hand of the foe,
 ³gathering them in from the lands;
  from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
 ²³Some went down to the sea in ships,
  plying their trade in deep waters. 
 ²⁴They beheld the works of the Lord,
  God’s wonderful works in the deep.
 ²⁵Then God spoke, and a stormy wind arose,
  which tossed high the waves of the sea.
 ²⁶They mounted up to the heavens and descended to the depths;
  their souls melted away in their peril.
 ²⁷They staggered and reeled like drunkards,
  and all their skill was of no avail.
 ²⁸Then in their trouble they cried to the Lord,
  and you delivered them from their distress.
 ²⁹You stilled the storm to a whisper
  and silenced the waves of the sea. 
 ³⁰Then were they glad when it grew calm,
  when you guided them to the harbor they desired.
 ³¹Let them give thanks to you, Lord, for your steadfast love
  and your wonderful works for all people.
 ³²Let them exalt you in the assembly of the people;
  in the council of the elders, let them sing hallelujah!

Den gracias al Señor, porque él es bueno;
    su gran amor perdura para siempre.
² Que lo digan los redimidos del Señor,
    a quienes redimió del poder del adversario,
³ a quienes reunió de todos los países,
    de oriente y de occidente, del norte y del sur

²³ Se hicieron a la mar en sus barcos;
    para comerciar surcaron las muchas aguas.
²⁴ Allí, en las aguas profundas,
    vieron las obras del Señor y sus maravillas.
²⁵ Habló Dios, y se desató un fuerte viento
    que tanto encrespó las olas
²⁶ que subían a los cielos y bajaban al abismo.
    Ante el peligro, ellos perdieron el coraje.
²⁷ Como ebrios tropezaban, se tambaleaban;
    de nada les valía toda su pericia.
²⁸ En su angustia clamaron al Señor,
    y él los sacó de su aflicción.
²⁹ Cambió la tempestad en suave brisa:
    se sosegaron las olas del mar.
³⁰ Ante esa calma se alegraron,
    y Dios los llevó al puerto anhelado.

³¹ ¡Que den gracias al Señor por su gran amor,
    por sus maravillas en favor de los hombres!
³² ¡Que lo exalten en la asamblea del pueblo!
    ¡Que lo alaben en el consejo de los ancianos!

¹As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. ²For he says,
 “At an acceptable time I have listened to you,
  and on a day of salvation I have helped you.”
See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! ³We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, ⁴but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, ⁵beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; ⁶by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, ⁷truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; ⁸in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; ⁹as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; ¹⁰as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
  ¹¹We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. ¹²There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. ¹³In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also.

 Nosotros, colaboradores de Dios, les rogamos que no reciban su gracia en vano. ² Porque él dice:

«En el momento propicio te escuché,
    y en el día de salvación te ayudé».

Les digo que este es el momento propicio de Dios; ¡hoy es el día de salvación!

³ Por nuestra parte, a nadie damos motivo alguno de tropiezo, para que no se desacredite nuestro servicio. ⁴ Más bien, en todo y con mucha paciencia nos acreditamos como servidores de Dios: en sufrimientos, privaciones y angustias; ⁵ en azotes, cárceles y tumultos; en trabajos pesados, desvelos y hambre. ⁶ Servimos con pureza, conocimiento, constancia y bondad; en el Espíritu Santo y en amor sincero; ⁷ con palabras de verdad y con el poder de Dios; con armas de justicia, tanto ofensivas como defensivas;^[b] 8 por honra y por deshonra, por mala y por buena fama; veraces, pero tenidos por engañadores; ⁹ conocidos, pero tenidos por desconocidos; como moribundos, pero aún con vida; golpeados, pero no muertos; ¹⁰ aparentemente tristes, pero siempre alegres; pobres en apariencia, pero enriqueciendo a muchos; como si no tuviéramos nada, pero poseyéndolo todo.

¹¹ Hermanos corintios, les hemos hablado con toda franqueza; les hemos abierto de par en par nuestro corazón. ¹² Nunca les hemos negado nuestro afecto, pero ustedes sí nos niegan el suyo. ¹³ Para corresponder del mismo modo —les hablo como si fueran mis hijos—, ¡abran también su corazón de par en par!

³⁵When evening had come, [Jesus said to the disciples,] “Let us go across to the other side.” ³⁶And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. ³⁷A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. ³⁸But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” ³⁹He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. ⁴⁰He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” ⁴¹And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

³⁵ Ese día al anochecer, les dijo a sus discípulos:

—Crucemos al otro lado.

³⁶ Dejaron a la multitud y se fueron con él en la barca donde estaba. También lo acompañaban otras barcas. ³⁷ Se desató entonces una fuerte tormenta, y las olas azotaban la barca, tanto que ya comenzaba a inundarse. ³⁸ Jesús, mientras tanto, estaba en la popa, durmiendo sobre un cabezal, así que los discípulos lo despertaron.

—¡Maestro! —gritaron—, ¿no te importa que nos ahoguemos?

³⁹ Él se levantó, reprendió al viento y ordenó al mar:

—¡Silencio! ¡Cálmate!

El viento se calmó y todo quedó completamente tranquilo.

⁴⁰ —¿Por qué tienen tanto miedo? —dijo a sus discípulos—. ¿Todavía no tienen fe?

⁴¹ Ellos estaban espantados y se decían unos a otros:

—¿Quién es este, que hasta el viento y el mar le obedecen?
