¹See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. ²But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?
  For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; ³he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. ⁴Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

El Señor Todopoderoso responde: «Yo estoy por enviar a mi mensajero para que prepare el camino delante de mí. De pronto vendrá a su templo el Señor a quien ustedes buscan; vendrá el mensajero del pacto, en quien ustedes se complacen».

² Pero ¿quién podrá soportar el día de su venida? ¿Quién podrá mantenerse en pie cuando él aparezca? Porque será como fuego de fundidor o lejía de lavandero. ³ Se sentará como fundidor y purificador de plata; purificará a los levitas y los refinará como se refinan el oro y la plata. Entonces traerán al Señor ofrendas conforme a la justicia, ⁴ y las ofrendas de Judá y Jerusalén serán aceptables al Señor, como en tiempos antiguos, como en años pasados.

⁶⁸Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel,
  you have come to your people and set them free.
 ⁶⁹You have raised up for us a mighty Savior,
  born of the house of your servant David. 
 ⁷⁰Through your holy prophets, you promised of old to save us from our enemies,
  ⁷¹from the hands of all who hate us,
 ⁷²to show mercy to our forebears,
  and to remember your holy covenant.
 ⁷³This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham:
  ⁷⁴to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
 free to worship you without fear,
  ⁷⁵holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life. 
 ⁷⁶And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
  for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
 ⁷⁷to give God’s people knowledge of salvation
  by the forgiveness of their sins.
 ⁷⁸In the tender compassion of our God
  the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
 ⁷⁹to shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death,
  and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁶⁸ «Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel,
    porque ha venido a redimir a su pueblo.
⁶⁹ Nos envió un poderoso Salvador
    en la casa de David su siervo
⁷⁰ (como lo prometió en el pasado por medio de sus santos profetas),
⁷¹ para librarnos de nuestros enemigos
    y del poder de todos los que nos aborrecen;
⁷² para mostrar misericordia a nuestros padres
    al acordarse de su santo pacto.
⁷³     Así lo juró a Abraham nuestro padre:
⁷⁴ nos concedió que fuéramos libres del temor,
    al rescatarnos del poder de nuestros enemigos,
para que le sirviéramos ⁷⁵ con santidad y justicia,
    viviendo en su presencia todos nuestros días.

⁷⁶ »Y tú, hijito mío, serás llamado profeta del Altísimo,
    porque irás delante del Señor para prepararle el camino.
⁷⁷ Darás a conocer a su pueblo la salvación
    mediante el perdón de sus pecados,
⁷⁸ gracias a la entrañable misericordia de nuestro Dios.
    Así nos visitará desde el cielo el sol naciente,
⁷⁹ para dar luz a los que viven en tinieblas,
    en la más terrible oscuridad,
para guiar nuestros pasos por la senda de la paz».

³I thank my God every time I remember you, ⁴constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, ⁵because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. ⁶I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. ⁷It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God’s grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. ⁸For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. ⁹And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight ¹⁰to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, ¹¹having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

³ Doy gracias a mi Dios cada vez que me acuerdo de ustedes. ⁴ En todas mis oraciones por todos ustedes, siempre oro con alegría, ⁵ porque han participado en el evangelio desde el primer día hasta ahora. ⁶ Estoy convencido de esto: el que comenzó tan buena obra en ustedes la irá perfeccionando hasta el día de Cristo Jesús. ⁷ Es justo que yo piense así de todos ustedes porque los llevo^[a] en el corazón; pues, ya sea que me encuentre preso o defendiendo y confirmando el evangelio, todos ustedes participan conmigo de la gracia que Dios me ha dado. ⁸ Dios es testigo de cuánto los quiero a todos con el entrañable amor de Cristo Jesús.

⁹ Esto es lo que pido en oración: que el amor de ustedes abunde cada vez más en conocimiento y en buen juicio, ¹⁰ para que disciernan lo que es mejor, y sean puros e irreprochables para el día de Cristo, ¹¹ llenos del fruto de justicia que se produce por medio de Jesucristo, para gloria y alabanza de Dios.

¹In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, ²during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. ³He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, ⁴as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,
 “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
 ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
  make his paths straight.
 ⁵Every valley shall be filled,
  and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
 and the crooked shall be made straight,
  and the rough ways made smooth;
 ⁶and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

 En el año quince del reinado de Tiberio César, Poncio Pilato gobernaba la provincia de Judea, Herodes^[a] era tetrarca en Galilea, su hermano Felipe en Iturea y Traconite, y Lisanias en Abilene; ² el sumo sacerdocio lo ejercían Anás y Caifás. En aquel entonces, la palabra de Dios llegó a Juan hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto. ³ Juan recorría toda la región del Jordán predicando el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados. ⁴ Así está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías:

«Voz de uno que grita en el desierto:
“Preparen el camino del Señor,
    háganle sendas derechas.
⁵ Todo valle será rellenado,
    toda montaña y colina será allanada.
Los caminos torcidos se enderezarán,
    las sendas escabrosas quedarán llanas.
⁶ Y todo mortal verá la salvación de Dios”».
